Fellow Guppans in London

Hello girls,
i am traveling to london and would love to know if you locals have any tips to share. If you can give me the areas/names of desi places that sell reasonably priced dresses, good food, it would help tremendously.
thanks in advance

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

East London for food. Sorry, don't know about dresses as the last time I wore one was about 20 years ago when I mum thought it would be funny. (I was one at the time).

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

thanks CEO, how far is that from Islington? what kind of an area is Islington? I am new, going for the first time, won't have a car, so your help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

Even though I am in Manchester. I hope I am still able to tell you of some places. Generally for food and clothing you should go to east end. If you take the tube, you should go to Altgate, altgate east by tube. Also, you can go to Wembley Central to see some more asian shops, restaurants. For arabic stuff (restaurants) go to Edgeware road. Hope it helps.

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

if u want cheap and nice clothes southall is really good. its abit of a mission from central london you have to get a tube and train but its worth it. you can haggle for prices and it has some good food places aswell. its deffo worth checking out. theres a long arse road with cheap jewellery and clothes. also green street is good for asian clothes. for other good shopping places is knightsbridge (harrods) and also camden market and portobello market!!

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

Green street is good which is in ilford. It's got no nice food places though. Southall is good for food and has a good choice of clothes as well!

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

Cupcake green streen is a seperate place frm Ilford! Incidentally, ilford lane has a few good places, it depends on your budget though as some of them are pricey. I love RCD in ilford, and a coupla others, although what kind of dresses are you looking for also?
Also, green street has a few nice places, but i've noticed that to get the nicer styles you have to get them custom made which costs more. i'm not too impressed by green street shops.

Lol whoops sorry! That's what I get for trying to make out I know London which I don't! Ilford lane? Ooh never been there! Might have to next time. It's true though there's only few shops in green street and they're very overpriced!

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

I think for cheap clothes AND variety of food you must go to Southall. You can spend one whole day there, thats how many shops there are! Clothes of all price ranges are available. To get there I would say get the train from Paddington station to southalls own train station.

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

I am not a "Guppan" yet though I'd drop few lines. For all desi stuff, West London is better than East London, unless you are a Bengali.

For shopping (West London):

Southall
Hounslow
Wembley
Harrow

South London:
Tooting.

For food:
West London:
Southall
Hounslow

South London:
Tooting.

Not typing about East since others have given appropriate information e.g. Green Street etc.

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

Sorry,I disagree about shopping in Harrow,it's pretty useless...dunno where the desi shops are.Ditto Wembley, unless you are talking about Ealing Road. Not worth the trek if you are commuting.

Tooting is good for food..haven't been for ages so can't comment on shopping, but there are a some nice shops there like Khushboo.

What everyone said about Southall...good for shopping and food too.

Green Street is a bit of a poor cousin of Southall I think. Not so much ronakh...

Lahore and Tayyab's in Commercial Road...East london....has some great food.

Re: Fellow Guppans in London

Angel very very close to Islington has some lovey resturants, mainly Turkish, Lebanese but halal. Shopping, for ready made outfits, after a recent trip to Green Street I was very disappointed, really really poor quality. Southall is pretty much the same, it really depends when you go, good stock sells out the same day. Southall and Ealing are more for Indian outfits, Green Street sells more Pakistani clothes. I wouldn't say any of the 'cheap' outfits I have bought from both Southall and Green street last very long, they are better for one off or maybees twice offs but they wont last you long. For loose fabric Green Street is better than Southall. Ealing for Saris.
