I feel a lot of guilty whenever I dine out with freinds and office colleagues! Spending Rs. 500 or circa on just one meal outside is simply too lavish considering the present rate of inflation and the fact that millions of our fellow citizens are living below poverty level. This feel of guilt increases when you see loads of people begging for outside the resturants. Dining out has become a fashion over here and people are simply crazy for it.
Quite contrary to this, I had altogether different feelings during my two years stay in London. I was always wondering over the way the gora people (or even local desies) spending too much on just one meal (10 pounds or a so for just one pizza or curry meal) whereas I used to spend not more than 20 pounds on food in a week and that included all the necessary stuff - meat, chicken, vegetables and fruits.
then, you should cook at home when having friends over for food and limit your spending on wasteful outdoor eating too frequently or go for places that are affordable.
you wont feel guilty then and please dont think that this is about keeping status quo among friends.
save that money and spend in investing to perhaps even help set up a halal restaurant/cafe business for a person who could really beenfit from your charity.
Positive feeling of guilt is a good sign. It is a sign of Eimaan. A good soul still exist in you. But dont let it die over the time, do something u can at ur level
If you dine out, you are in a way helping the resturant, its worker and the area. Just be humble with success. :)
Unfortunately most of the workers are paid unfairly here in this country. The bulk of the profit goes into the pocket of the owner. And they force their workers to ask for tip like beggars.
Moreover, the waiter serving you at your table is an insult to a human being (at least I think so). The self serving resturants like KFC and Macdonalds are better in this respect.
I personally think, it's a multi-dimensional issue. You should dine out, and treat yourself once in a while; however, to make it a habit would be like deliberately making a point of spending extraordinarliy, while you could just have a decent meal at home, and overtime, charity that money to someone you could really use it and pray for you in return.
To live life and spend in modesty is the message delivered by the religion, and conscience ought to be trained to follow such discipline.
I eat out sometimes as well, but i try and not do it more than twice or thrice a month because what my $5-$10 won't do for me, will do much for someone elsewhere who is really worthy of it rather than me wasting it.

KFC and McDonalds are not resturants, they are fast food joints. Every resturant has workers, who cook, clean and serve their customers. Otherwise, it is nothing but cooking forzen food.
Bulk of profit always goes to the pocket of the owner. I don't know how unfairly they are treated in Pakistan, but there is a reason they are working there, to pay their bills, put their kids through college and other things. You are in a way helping the country as long as you show balance in spending. If you really hate the way waiters are treated, may be just order salads and give these waiters big tip.

Yes you are right about KFC. But I like the idea of self serving.
But remember we as a developing nation are spending too much on consumer goods and saving too little. This is short run approach. If we spend less on consumer goods now and save them for capital goods, in the long run, we will be able to spend more on consumer goods as a result of improved economy.

Well i persoanlly feel tht the reason for KARACHIITES go out to dine more (dont know abt others) is lack of entertainment places ...
I mean there are quite a few here ...... but either those are havily crowded ...... or are for *families only *.....
so dont feel guilty ...... cuz every 1 want to change home-office-home routine once in a while
Mostar you should not feel guilty about dining out. If you have worked hard you deserve to treat yourself...Guilt is wasted emotion. Perhaps you can directly help others in need by giving some money, clothes or perhaps education needs.
eating at fancy shimancy places in Pakistan is bewakoofi. go to chappar hotels and driver hotels for the best tasting food. umm umm umm.
Although I never been to Pakistan, I have been told the same. Hi ashtray:)
