the basic demographic reality is that india has around 170 million muslims and similarly pakistan has a few dozen hindus as well. so when talking us vs. them in the india-pakistan context, using the words hindu and muslim leads to obvious logical discrepancies involving huge numbers of people. whether it’s acceptable to call malaysia a muslim country or not is totally irrelevant.

Specifically, what is the logical discrepancy? Its straightforward, India is 80% Hindu, Pakistan is 90%+ Muslim. India’s ruling class is mainly Hindu. Pakistan’s ruling class is mainly Muslim. The paranoia about communalism is pretty India-specific, and it is tinged by communal riots and the partition and all that sorta stuff. It wouldnt be controversial in another country’s context.. why should we care about your neuroses.

Right.. hes said similar things in the other clips, which give more context to what hes been saying that than this 2 min clip. He clearly wasnt happy when he was in India with the environment he was in, the media coverage. And if Gambhir’s statements are reflective of the Indian team, he might have reason to be offended with them too. At any rate, the clip you show he clearly intends Muslim as Pakistan (he even rephrased Muslim as Pakistani). You can argue whether or not its correct that Pakistanies are more open minded towards peace than Indians are. At best he is incorrect (he isnt). Certainly not bigoted.
