Feeding Babies

My son is eight and half months old and I feed him formula and gerber baby foods. He has Reflux disease and therefore he has become a very fussy eater in the past few months. Has not gained sufficient weight during the past three months. My question is what else can I feed him…and in which form? He doesnt have teeth yet so I am scared that he could choke. Which foods do you give your babies from ages 6-12 months? Someone told me about boiling white rice and putting it in the blender.
Give me some more ideas plz.

Re: Feeding Babies

an 8 1/2 month old baby can pretty much eat anythin in mashed up form ... boil any veggie, mash and give it (peas, carrots, potatoes, etc)... sabut dana is good too... daliya with yakhni is great, add the chicken from the yakhni, break it into pcs and give him that.. he wont choke...u can also add minced meat to the porridge...

hmm... u can also boil fruit with a bit of sugar (or honey) mixed in and make a puree out of it... apple works great for this..

also.. make light shorba, put chappati or pita bread in it.. let it soak.. and then feed him the soft roti...

pulao... pasta (like maggi noodles -short kind) with minced meat..

honestly.. anythin goes.. as long as it doesnt mess with his reflux issues...

i've been around a lot of baby cousins lately and this is what they were being fed... one wouldnt eat anything baby-related.. wanted grown up food like nihari and biryani and korma.. and he was only 8 months!! .. hehe... no teeth but give me meat .. :D

Re: Feeding Babies

PM Mamaof3... Her eldest son also had reflux disease. I am sure she has great advice

Re: Feeding Babies

Everything Khawateen is saying is right. My daughter at that age wanted table food. So I just mashed it or softened it for her. Bananas are an excellent food. Avacados also.
Another thing you can do is cook keema, ground beef, cook and mash up some potatoe, mix in butter and some water. Then blend this smooth. Add in a bit of salt. My kids loved this and it was an easy transition into meat. I'm not sure what foods may bother a kid with reflux. But I know at that age babies want to try many new foods that they see others eating.
The only problem with rice is that it may cause constipation.

Re: Feeding Babies

I think he wants to eat what adults around him are eating. Also for some reason he doesn't want to eat from a spoon. But if I try the same food with my finger then he opens his mouth. So, I think he just wants to be like everyone else around him when it comes to eating.

Re: Feeding Babies

Neera, I fed my daughter by hand not from a spoon. She enjoyed this much more especially when she was teething. Her gums were painful and she got more food in her mouth when I used my hand.

You can also try to feed him very well cooked chicken mixed in some of its broth and butter. Just mash it or shred it up. Add a tiny bit of salt and pepper. I think babies really enjoy some flavor in food. My daughter refuses jarred baby food now.

Re: Feeding Babies

he can eat what you eat.. just make sure it's small enough not to get stuck in his oesophagus

Re: Feeding Babies

Hi, sorry to take so long, we had a few days away! lovely! anyway, to the thread-at-hand.

Babies who suffer from reflux can learn that eating makes them hurt so they start to avoid eating. Make sure that the reflux is treated, if home-based things dont work, take her to the doc and get her on reflux meds like zantac. Most infants with reflux outgrow it by 1 yr.

For milder cases of reflux, always do smaller, frequent meals. Make sure baby is fed upright and remains upright for at least 30 minutes after a meal. Many reflux babies are more comfortable sleeping in a semi-upright position too. You can push up the mattress with a pillow underneath to acheive this. Avoid all acidic foods, fruits and veggies. Feel free to pm any other questions....hope this helps!

Re: Feeding Babies

ok i have a few minutes more it looks like so heres more info on the whole reflux thing with babies....

there's a valve at the opening of the stomach called the LES valve. It opens to allow food to go down and then its supposed to stay closed. With reflux, the valve opens up and allows stomach contents and stomach acid to flow upward into the esophagus. This makes the esophagus and throat very sore and thats what makes baby hurt and can even make baby associate eating with pain. Thats why its important to make sure its treated. Most babies with reflux have an immature LES valve and as they approach their first birthday, its matured to the point that it doesnt randomly open up anymore. In the meantime, medication like zantac reduces the acid in the stomach so that the esophagus can heal and further damage is prevented.

As far as what foods to try, just stick to age-appropriate textures as long as she's handling it and avoid acidic foods. Anything else goes as long as she can eat it successfully and willingly! Theres a great website for parents of reflux babies and children called parent-2-parent.org....you can meet many parents there who have gone thru it all with this.

Re: Feeding Babies

Mamaof3, he is on Prevacid and taking it since a month. Before that it was the other way around, he would eat solids but refuse milk. And now he is drinking milk but refusing solids. Also, it takes him a long time to finish his bottles. Most of my day time is spent trying to feed him.

Re: Feeding Babies

My lil one is now four month old and I've just started on baby food, so far she has had apple and banana mix and mixed veggie.. I tried a mashed banana and she loved it..
ask ur doc, I think they know what to feed babies, plus I've seen that she will eat more when my husband will feed her.. maybe try so that the father or another person feed him sometimes, make feeding look like playing, she loves it when I feed her and play with her..

Re: Feeding Babies

Re: Feeding Babies

Neera, my goodness your situation brings back memories...it was the same with my eldest boy. It sounds like the reflux is still bothering him. The prevacid can take up to 2 weeks to start really working and the esophagus can take 4 to 6 weeks to heal so you may start seeing improvement soon but best to check back with your doc. He may need a larger dose or he may need a different medication. We once tried Nexium for my little guy and it did absolutely nothing for him - he stopped eating altogether until he switched to Prevacid. Also, did the doc tell you to give the prevacid on an empty stomach and wait 30 minutes before you feed him? Thats important.

If your son is starting to get orally defensive (not letting anything or anyone get near his mouth), try work with him to overcome this. Give him things that he likes to put in his mouth, give lots of kisses, facial massage etc. Play funny-face games with him. That parent-2-parent.org website has more tips and advice. I hope he starts eating better for you! Let us know Ok?

Re: Feeding Babies

^^ The doctor who prescribed prevacid told me to mix it with his formula. Another doctor told me to mix it with about 1 ounce of water and give it to him 30 minutes before meal. When I mixed it with water and tried to give him through a syringe he absoulutely refused it. He would not open his mouth and cry a lot. So I had no choice left but to just mix it with formula and give it to him that way. He has been taking it for a whole month now and the doctor said that he will be on it until he is a year old. I wonder if mixing with formula and giving it to him that way doesn't work as well as mixing with water and giving 30 min. before meal.

Re: Feeding Babies

ms Neera, the thing with the medication is that its supposed to dissolve in the intestines - in a non-alkaline environment. So if its given with milk, it dissolves in the stomach, before it can get to intestines and it doesnt "do its work". Thats why they tell you, mix it with applesauce or anything that isnt alkaline (milk-based) and then wait for at least 30 min....this could be the problem that you're having right now.

Re: Feeding Babies

hugz

Re: Feeding Babies

my mom used to feed us mashed up chicken, meat, patatoes, carrots, and god knows waht else

Re: Feeding Babies

The doctors never told me about mixing it in applesauce. But I will definitely try that now. Do you mix it with just two or three teaspoons of applesause?

Re: Feeding Babies

Prevacid comes in 2 different forms. First is the pills that you break open and give baby the tiny little medicine balls mixed with - yes - a teaspoon or 2 of applesauce. The other form it comes in is a packet of powder that you mix with water. My little guy doesnt like applesauce so its easier for us to use the powder and syringe it into his mouth. Either way, no milk, milk products or alkaline-based liquids with this medicine! Give on an empty stomach and wait for 30 minutes after the medicine before feeding. Hopefully, IN shallah you will see a good improvement!
