With the current increase in tuition fees in UK universities, do you think paying £10,000 per year for a degree in Classics or similar areas(Languages) is worth it?
Re: Fee Rise in UK
In general, qualifications obtained from the US and UK are internationally recognised and preferred over qualifications from, let's say, Pakistan.
That's not to say the rise in fees isn't ridiculous. For a degree in classics/languages, I don't know why they would take 10,000 pounds from you? If it was a degree in science/med, you'd be paying for receiving training on state-of-the-art equipment that costs the college millions of pounds. For a 10,000 pound degree in languages, I'd expect various placements in different countries that speak the language. Otherwise, it isn't worth it. Then again, I don't know much about this area of study and job prospects in this area.
Re: Fee Rise in UK
In a word no. If you are aiming to be a translator for something then sure it works. But I have no clue how getting a degree in classics helps you get a job.
Re: Fee Rise in UK
No. That is a ridiculous amount.
Re: Fee Rise in UK
Aren't the fee increases coupled with the understanding that you need to have the ability to pay after graduation? Not that it lessens the pain but it's definitely something better than the US.
I doubt that a classics/languages graduate even from Oxbridge will have that massive earning power, so the fees would waived for them anyway.
Re: Fee Rise in UK
Education is no more cheap and its insane . Someone paying this much of money would like to have the equal return or more . No wonder society is getting so corrupt .
Re: Fee Rise in UK
No value can be placed on Education.
However this is frankly riddiculous and 10,000 pounds is no small amount... It seems these days University is for the rich.
Re: Fee Rise in UK
I'm not sure how this method works yet. I was checking SOAS and Royal Holloway's fees and apparently it doesn't give much information and probably they're going to apply new fees from September 2011. It was quite a disappointment for me because I decided to complete my education this year and now I'm hearing these news about a high rise in fees, I guess I'm just unlucky. haha
Re: Fee Rise in UK
I can Understand an Increase, but so MUCH all at Once ??! that isn't Right. At LEAST spread the Increase out over a few Years. DON'T hit the Kids with it all at Once. Its so unfair for young people starting out in their working life with a £30.000 debt.. Lucky me , I started earlier. The only thing that is free , the only right you have is the air you breath , everything else has to be earnt .
