The Federal cabinet on Wednesday held out firm assurance to the NWFP government to support it in its efforts in bringing peace to the war torn areas of Malakand including restive Swat valley in aftermath of breaking up of the peace accord with Sufi Muhammad’s TNSM, inside sources told DawnNews.
The cabinet discussed in detail, the overall security situation in the country with especial reference to the developments of Swat and Malakand agency.
It decided to get religious support against militancy and suicide bombings and decided that the government will soon be inviting Imam-e-Kaaba to visit Pakistan in order to preach the true face of Islam which strongly condemns and abhors suicide bombings indiscriminately killing people.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, chairing the cabinet briefed it on the latest developments in Swat after the Frontier government asked the security forces to intervene and take action against miscreants and militants.
Earlier, the Prime Minister took the Cabinet into confidence about the recent security situation in the country with particular reference to the status of Swat in aftermath of collapse of agreement with TNSM, army action in Lower Dir and Buner and relief activities for the Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) in NWFP.
The Prime Minister informed the Cabinet that the army in certain areas of NWFP was called by the provincial government.
The Federal Government has already sanctioned Rs.500 million for the provision of food and shelter as well as facilitating relief activities for the IDPs and in addition, Rs.8 million has been granted for the provision of food items on emergency basis for the IDPS through Utility Stores Corporation from their regional set up at Peshawar.
The cabinet was further informed that the NWFP Government has been directed to mobilize its financial and physical resources to provide immediate assistance to IDPs till their return to their areas after the restoration of peace.
