Feast of the Sacrifice

This is the most important celebration in Islam. It takes place on the tenth day of the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar.

Feast of the Sacrifice celebrates the occasion when the monotheistic Prophet Abraham (greetings of peace be upon him) was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael (greetings of peace be upon him) to show his obedience to God. Muslims all around the world will celebrate this day, although it has particular significance for pilgrims who at this time will be completing a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. The day begins with a sacrifice of an animal in commemoration of Abraham’s sacrifice of a lamb in place of his son. One-third of the meat is given to the poor, and the rest shared by family and friends.

Across the world Muslims will wear best clothes and traditional prayers will be said in the morning. Friends and family will visit each other exchanging presents and cards.
