Fears about labor and delivery

For those of you that had anxiety about labor and delivery near the end, how did you cope and prepare for it? I have been wanting to start watching videos and reading more and more on it with my husband but everytime he asks I get a wave of anxiousness and put it off. My husband is a biology guy and loved to learn about this stuff and I am the complete opposite and have been avoiding it. It kind of wants to make me cry and I have been putting it off and out of my mind as mashallah se for the most part I’ve had very little issues out of the norm through out the pregnancy but now as immmo inf into my third trimester in starting to feel the anxiety start to set in now everytime I think about it and have new discomforts starting to appear. A bit of anxiety and a bit of paranoia. I still need to make my hospital bag so maybe that will give me some peace of mind to keep preparing? :frowning: any words of comfort will help I’m sure.

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

i am in my 8th month.

tbh i am not really thinking of labour pain as such but i am scared of the whole process. like what if i am late in going to the hospital, what if i am overdue and what if i am stuck somewhere outside alone.
i have watched a video the other day and it made me cry. the girl was so fresh and was not even shouting..just pressing her lips really hard while pushing and the camera was placed at her head rather than at her privates. but as soon as i saw the baby come out...i got teary eyes and then cried the whole evening.

i have started packing my hospital bag 10 days ago and honestly i change something every day.

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

I never really had any fears. Was glad when my water broke. Went to hospital pretty calm too. Everyone at the hospital was nice and reassuring. I guess it was my first and i assumed nothing would go wrong. This time is different . Im really concerned about having the baby safely but not about the pain of labour.

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

Just think people have been doing this for thousands of years and there must have been people who were even more scared than you are. And there is pain relief available as well. I have never watched a video as I knew I could not handle it but read a lot of books. Going on a labor and delivery win tour of the hospital you will be delivering in should help a lot too. IA, all will be well.

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

Please don't watch labor/delivery videos...all they do is freak you out. Or they freaked me out at least.

You're pregnant. You WILL have this baby eventually. And when that time comes, Allah swt will carry you through it like He does in all of our trials and tribulations. He gives you a baby but also the strength to deliver and raise him/her.

Just have faith in Allah...complete and total faith.

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

I really hope i start feeling anxious lol so far i'm super excited for labour LOL

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

We did a hospital tour around 7 or 8th (i dont remember, its been 4 years :O). During the tour they also covered labor and delivery. The course was short but covered the basics like what to expect when you come in, list of medicines they could be using depending on what i wanted to do, what happens during a c-section, who is allowed during labor and few other things.

I thought the tour and the class was great. It didn't go too much into gross details, but covered enough to prepare me. I ended up having a c-section and AH was not scared at all.

Good luck!

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

In uk, do you request a labour ward tour or do they book you in automatically?

I am 34 weeks and still not seen the wards, i have no idea where i should go if i am in labour. Is it the maternity ward recrption, the a&e or the main reception?
What if labour comes at night?

Re: Fears about labor and delivery

Are you in the London area? Most hospitals there do tours, but you have to make an appointment or sign up. Call the maternity ward for info. I gave birth in the UK last year, and the hospital did antenatal classes as well as maternity tours. Take your hubby along too - on D Day he will need to know where the closest parking lot is, where to take you for admission etc.

To your other question on where to go: Once you start getting contractions, start timing them and call the labour ward when they are regular (approx 10 mins apart). They will guide you on when you need to come in. All this is covered in the antenatal classes. Your midwife can also discuss this with you.
