What does it mean for a Drug or Food item to be FDA approved?
I know that it is considered to be safe & the authority is responsible if any damage takes place but does it mean that the drug prescribed by the doctor for any reason even as for weight loss, birth control, supplements etc… any reason would only serve the purpose without having any damage or side effects.
Just because a food or drug is FDA approved does NOT mean it will not have any side effects. In fact, most if not all drugs have side effects but they are approved by FDA because the side effects are not severe and/or positive effects outweigh the negative effects.

And because of this approval the drug companies are bound to inform the doctors public about all those side effects to let the patients/doctors/customers make an informed decision as to if they want to use those drugs and products.
Even medications prescribed by the doctor and OTC drugs have side effects. So it's not necessarily so that something approved by the FDA will not have side effects. The company is supposed to list possible side effects. The FDA can also test to see if the merits of a certain food are true. For example, it may sometimes say that the claimed benefits of a particular product (and I've seen this often with GNC supplements) have not been tested by the FDA.
GNC supplements reminds me supplements are NOT tested and approved by FDA. Therefore 1. whatever benefits it supposedly has isn't tested and proved and 2. supplements may not even have the same ingredients in each bottle/what it says is in it.
So my cousin has been given a medicine for Obesity. She has to eat it right after she has a meal. The medicine will consume all the fat content of the meal she takes. This way she wouldn't gain further weight & if followed by a low calorie diet will be able to lose weight as well.
She was prescribed this by a doctor & a doctor who is part of American Physicians association & American Diabeticians Association. So the doctor sure is up to date about things & he emphasized usage of this medicine for her. He explicitly focused on the part that it is FDA approved & the only side effects it causes are stomach upsets & gas problems. Thats it!
Since, we all have heard that taking medication for weight loss isnt something good she is a bit reluctant to use. On the internet too, the medicine had safe reviews.
So then it put me into thought that what ever is FDA approved is safe to use be it for which ever purpose then if the normal side effects are known?
Whatever is approved by the FDA undergoes years of research(first on animals and then on human subjects) and scrutiny before it is marketed for human use.It certainly does not mean that it does not have side effects.
Whatever says 'Not approved by the FDA' means that there might be some research done somewhere on it but the FDA has not approved that particular ingredient or drug. Doctors can certainly suggest a patient can take a non-FDA approved medicine or supplement like some vitamins etc.
Daffy Duck...What I think is that, not most of these supplement types of drugs which include weight loss pills etc are usually not approved by the FDA,and only a few are.So when he prescribed it to your cousin he emphasized on that.Obviously the FDA approval ensures a certain safety standard for a drug/ingredient/supplement.

In regards to the bold part. Yes, taking wt loss medications over the counter WITHOUT doctor supervision/advice is unsafe. BUT since her doctor prescribed it he/she will know what signs and symptoms to look out for and will surely make sure she doesn't experience severe negative effects of the medication. Like the above poster said he must've mentioned its FDA approved because its not a random supplement or herbal medication (the kind sold on the internet).
Also, from the sounds of what you described the medication is suppose to do it seems like its the same medication people with high cholesterol take. These medications prevent the body from absorbing the fat in the meal. On top of that exercise will help her lose body fat she already has.
Yes, FDA approved drugs are safe to use BUT there can slim chances of a severe side effect to occur. I would advise your cousin to follow her doctor's reccomendations and take the medication as prescribed. Make sure if she experiences any side effects she relays them to her doctor.
