Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

This is not good news for people of Swat who lived through terror of terrorist Fazullah run Swat. I hope the army gets the murderous scum soon & kill him in most painful manner possible.

Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive
After losing control of Pakistan’s Swat Valley, the ‘Radio Mullah’ vows to pursue jihad again in the troubled region.
Perhaps the Pakistani military’s most impressive accomplishment in the past two years was its major offensive into the Swat Valley that succeeded in driving out Islamist militants who had established control over one of the country’s favorite tourist destinations—strategically located less than 150 miles from Islamabad. In the months-long process of scattering the gunmen, the military became confident that it had all but decapitated the valley’s radical leadership.
As a crowning achievement last July, it announced that Maulana Fazlullah, the militants’ extremist leader, had been gravely wounded. There were unconfirmed reports that he had had both legs amputated, and was on the verge of death. Since then, rumor had it that he was still alive and had escaped to Afghanistan. Another report this past May said he had been killed leading a Taliban assault on an Afghan border post. Now there is no doubt: Fazlullah, who was known as “Radio Mullah” for his firebrand, hate-filled speeches on his illegal FM radio station in the valley, is very much alive and determined to pursue his “jihad” in Swat.
In a 40-minute video obtained by NEWSWEEK, the 31-year-old, bushy-bearded extremist appears healthy, walks in verdant, pine-covered mountains, fires his Kalashnikov, and addresses some 20 young men who are described as being suicide bombers, or “fedayeen.” “I am asking my fedayeen to target the military, its supporters, and their leadership,” he says. “Your flesh and bones will be bullets that pierce through the heads of the infidels in this noble cause.” The provider of the video says it was recorded in recent days.

Chillingly, Fazlullah dismisses as justified any collateral damage his suicide bombers may cause. “Even if innocent people are killed while hitting these targets, it is allowed as Islam gives you permission to do it," he says. In the professionally produced video that displays the “Al Fatah” logo, meaning victory in Arabic, Fazlullah boasts that he has a stable of 300 suicide bombers that he is ready to unleash in Pakistan.
The video is likely to disturb the 2 million–plus Swat residents who fear that Fazlullah and his brutal and radical ways could return to haunt them once again. Just as worrying is the fact that Fazlullah is shown sitting with one of his high-level commanders and several lieutenants, proof that at least part of his command structure is intact. To add to the potential threat to locals, he even denounced the valley’s long-running music festival as “promoting vulgarity and obscenity.” That has always been one of his favorite themes: demanding that the people follow strict, joyless, Taliban-style lives. By early 2009, Fazlullah had largely seized control of Swat through a series of peace deals with the government, a brutal campaign of assassinating police and local political leaders, and of burning girls’ schools. In his FM radio broadcasts he lambasted music, dancing, TV, DVDs, and barber shops, and ordered his gunmen to burn any places where such “immorality” existed.
Fazlullah, who is closely aligned with other Pakistani Taliban leaders such as Hakimullah Mehsud, arguably would still be in control of the valley except that he and his allies became too ambitious. Rather than being content with consolidating power in Swat, he dispatched his armed followers to seize neighboring districts, advancing perilously close to Islamabad in March 2009. The Army, which had supported peace deals with Fazlullah in the past, finally woke up to the threat under heavy international pressure and counterattacked. Some 2 million Swatis fled their homes during the fighting as the Army systematically eliminated the militants’ presence in the valley, sometimes through extra-judicial killings, human-rights activists charge. In his video, Fazlullah tries to turn the tables on the military. “The Army committed the worst terrorism by killing innocent people in Swat,” he says, calling his retreat “tactical and part of our strategy.”
After viewing the footage, regional experts believe that Fazlullah staged the video in a Taliban-controlled area of northeastern Afghanistan. That still puts him a long way away from Swat. But distance is scant consolation to the valley’s residents who now know he is alive and threatening to renew his demented jihad. “God has given us the power that we shall not be afraid of our enemy,” Fazlullah gruesomely concludes. “Let’s see how things will change when we launch a hundred suicide bombings.”

Re: Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

Nusrat Javed clearly hinted in a show a few months back that the army smuggled him out to Afghanistan to keep him safe... the implication is clearly that there are parts of the army leadership which still believes that these animals will be of use to them in their stupid "strategic depth" games and considers them to be assets that will come in handy later on. hence, they're not really going after them or punishing them which certainly seems to be the case when you consider the fact that how many of these jaahil moulvi thugs have we seen on trial? where is that mullah Sufi ullu? he is clearly a traitor. he was arrested with his progeny. why is he not on trial? where is Muslim Khan? he was captured? why is he not being tried? how many other taliban leaders were captured? if they were killed, why were their names not released?

it is obviously too much to expect the army leadership to have any respect for the lives of bloody civilians like us. but what makes it really sad is that they have no respect for their own jawaans and officers who have laid down their lives in this fight. if you won't bring them to justice for the people of Swat you suffered tremendously under these animals' tyranny... bring them to justice in the names of the martyred armymen. seems like they're not willing to do that either. just makes you worry more and more about the country and the direction it's heading in.

when you think you're so smart, you can double cross everybody... eventually you might be the one double crossed by everyone else (both Musharraf and Zia are examples of that). then you won't look as smart as you think you are. something for the current army leadership to think about.

Re: Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

^So much for the army which booted out Taleban from Swat. With such encouragement from genral public army's moral to fight them will be really high.

This strategic depth is yet another conspiracy theory that some journalists are flagging, without an iota of proof.

fair enough. mullah Fazlu's escape might be a conspiracy theory... or at least there is no proof though Nusrat Javed is a very credible and responsible journalist and he doesn't make claims out of thin air.

the question arises... why have there been no trials of those that have been arrested? Muslim Khan and Sufi are supposed to be under arrest. where are the trials? where are the punishments?

and in retrospect I find it very interesting that an army that often takes over the whole country when it perceives the country to be heading in the wrong direction (or if its boss's job is under threat) sat by quietly as the taliban took over a part of Pakistan - not just any part. but Swat - the crown jewel of Pakistan's tourism. there was not a peep out of the army for so long in which time first Musharraf's govt and then the PPP's govt bumbled and stumbled its way... until FINALLY it was decided to go after people who had practically taken over a part of Pakistan? where was the army's patriotism then? the triple one brigade is ever ready to unleash its patriotism on elected prime ministers. why did the same army stand by for so long while a full and bloody rebellion against the state unfolded in a very important and well known part of Pakistan?

I have nothing but respect for the shuhada who were martyred in the operations who we owe tremendous respect and gratitude. but overall the army's policy against the militants is still as clear as mud.

Re: Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

Pakistan definitely needs to kill khawarij like him, but if we really want to eradicate this problem then we need to take away the opportunites mullahs like him are getting to inculcate young minds in their bigoted form of religion. After receiving this hateful propaganda from such a young age, these students grow up to be monsters like Fazlullah and Mehsuds.

We need stop the factory which is creating these monsters, if we really want to have a hope for the future. Otherwise this fight will continue, and Pakistan will continue to suffer.

Re: Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

Looks like you make up your mind by reading western sources which dish out material depending upon their relation with army or the indian backed elements which always try to cast doubt on Pakistan's sincerety. Otherwise policy is clear, army will go after the Taleban behind violence in Pakistan first and foremost. For other groups, NATO has to put their house in order.

Re: Fazlullah, Widely Feared Mullah, Is Alive

fyi, fazlullah was never killed in the so-called firefight with afghan troops on the border some time back when all of you were jumping for joy. what really happened was the mujahideen on the other side captured the checkpoint killing ANA, that's where fazlullah escaped his death.

any terrorist killed is a matter of joy especially one who has been killing hundreds of innocent people. As for the terrorists capturing ANA, ignorance is bliss.

none of what I wrote was based off a western source. I've seen all these points being raised by Pakistani journalists on Pakistani TV channels. I've seen even ordinary Pakistanis call in Bolta Pakistan (back when it was on aaj) and raise these issues. guys like Kamran Shafi, Nusrat Javed, etc have all raised these issues in their writings/programs.

thankfully some common sense. getting tired of seeing Pakistanis who live in or hail from urban Pakistan and enjoy the facilities the state provides support these terrorist animals.

GS needs to evolve a policy to deal with posters who support the taliban openly or subtly. it should be unacceptable to support terrorists or their cause in Pakistan openly or otherwise.

Ye kabi murthai nai hai?!?!

You know what, even though it would be nice, but if all such people are banned then there will be no representation from their side. It is necessary to hear their point of view because, unfortunately, people with this mentality are too many in Pakistan (if not majority).
As much as I hate to say it, this is why I wanted cricketplaya to stay. Because he brought to the discussion table the cave-thinking of terrorists.

I would have totally disagreed with you except for the part in bold which is true and tragic. too many of these Jamat-e-Islami donkeys are vocal on the internet when it comes to Pakistan affairs.

what will become of this country whose own citizens sympathize and support animals who are slowly destroying their own country?
