I was reading this book “Islam and Development” by John L. Espotito and talking about Pakistan in the Ayub Khan era, he mentioned that the differences between the government and the ulema were further dterriorated when Dr. Fazl-ur-Rehman pblished his book “Islam”. Dr. Fazl-ur-Rehman had been appointed as the director of this Islamic research center supposed to advise the goverment on matters of Shariah.
So, when I returned the book to the library, by coincidence my eyes fell upon this book “Islam” that was mentioned.
So far I have only read the first two chapters and a part of the third. I have seen the author putting forward views (mainly of non-muslim authors) that are contradicting to the traditional muslim views but he does in a very soft manner reject those views and reminds us of the traditional views, although rarely. And at some points he seems to be just presenting his views on the renewal of some Islamic laws to meet the modern times; just like many other muslim thinkers have done before and after him, including the much celebrated Allama Iqbal.
Has anyone read the book?
Does anyone know what all the commotion was all about?
Maybe its something in the later chapters but so far I dint find something that is really so bad that the ulema wanted the author’s blood and made him to flee to America (Chicago I think).

quote the writting of Allama Iqbal. Cuz all I've heared is that his poetry is full of islamic thought. I've heared various scholars quoting his poetry in the lectures
Which moullana Fazllul Rehman are you taking about./ Pakistanis' opposition leader.

"After graduating from the Universities of Punjab and Oxford, and teaching at the Universities of Durham and McGill, he worked as the Director of the Central Institute of Islamic Research in Pakistan till 1968. He lost his position as the result of the controversy arising from his view of the Quran. Then he migrated to the United States and became Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Chicago. His famous book Islam, is being used as a text book for undergraduate levels in Western Universities."
