Favourite Surahs & why?

A friend of mine in the media is working on an interesting documentry about peoples favourite Surahs and what relevance those surahs have to them.

I found the discussion very interesting, because you often learn a lot about other surahs and it broadens a persons understanding of the Holy Quran.

Anyway feel free to add your own, to the list with a few lines about why they are important to you. Try to remember that everyones knowledge of Surahs varies, so try to explain it as simplistic as possible.

Off the top of my head I have a few..

  1. Surah Qadr: The night of power, the fascination with the power of a single night where for lack of a better word the heavens open to hear your prayers.

  2. Nas & Falak because they are protective in times of sadness and pain

  3. Surah Al Kahf: The Cave: The mysticism and power of a surah which reminds us Islam is not about the rituals only, there is a world beyond it that we cannot see..and for the day dreamers it implies time travel!

  4. Surah Al Lahab: Of all the Surahs in the Holy Quran this one is the only one..from the second you recite it, you can feel the anger and hurt in it..it is harsh ..there is a rage in it..and it reminds me that while Allah is the forgiving and merciful, us humans can’t always be..

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

1) Sura Kahaf : very interesting and intiguing :

2) Large chunk of Surah Baqra , Sura Nisa related to commands and social etiquettes... Interestingly, Among world's 3 most popular religions/ system of beliefs and practice (population wise) there is no concept of divorce in their religious scriptures. Only one religion provides the most needed set of guidlines reguired by man and society

Only quran provides the complete and most comprehesive guidlines for maritial affairs. Pin points rights and responsibility so clearly that their is hardly any ambiguity left.

Most boring part is the storys of Bani Israel, how they were bestowed with bounties and blessing, thier arrogance and stupidity and disobedience

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

^Code Red my feeling is the story about Bani israel is because even we muslims have to learn lessons from it, and if you do see the world around we are trying to change the word of God and what not. This is my view.
1) Surah Baqara: I feel its just wonderful because its the second surah of the Quran and its gives a complete jist of what Islam is all about as it covers issues as
1) Pillars of Islam
2) Principles of islam
3) Interest, divorce, challenge to non-muslims,etc...
The first two points are important.
2) Surah Al Mulk: Fantastic surah, it shows the evidence of Allaah existing and warning the disbelievers with evidence.
3) Surah Al Mominoon: Absolute fantastic for the disbelievers who challenge the Prophet.
4) My most favourited Sural Al Ikhlas complete definition of Allaahin 4 lines.

Thats it, for now.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Just a small story behind this surah and warning to the disbelievers who mock our Prophet.

As we all know Prophet, called all the makkans near a mountain and warned of Allaah's warning so Abu lahab told the Prophet may Allaah perish you and your hands.

Now, this is a miracle Allaah revealed Surah Al Lahab and we know it talks about Abu lahab and his punishment in hell. What we get to know from this surah.
1) To prove Prophet wrong, Abu Lahab only for a second would convert to Islam just for the heck of it and lived as hypocrite to prove the Prophet wrong infact he lived for 10 years after this surah but still did not become a muslim and died as a kafir.
2) They say he had a horrific death, where there was some disease and it was stinking to such extent people had to stone him and bury him. What i learn, people mock Allaah its ok and its also provided some evidence in the Quran but disbelievers mocking our Prophet do infact have a horrific death for sure.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

surah ikhlas

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Surah Rehman.

Why?????? because it's simply beautiful.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

All of them are beautiful. And truthfully, its rather to do with the time that you are reciting them. I feel there are moments when Quran e pak offers more meaning to me than others. Similarily sometimes you feel certain feelings that sadly arent there all the time. Heart is very fickle in a sense that it remains prone to different thoughts and feelings each time you are reciting surahs. But these have become somewhat memorable. Some of them due to the meanings that i was able to grasp and others in the way in which i learned them.

Surah Iklhas: Because every time i recite it, i feel like it enhances my faith.
Surah Fatiah or Alhamd: Because its the most profoundly succint prayer.
I know Ayat ul Kursi is not a surah but it is exceedingly beautiful nonetheless. And i have read so many benefits of reciting it. My husband once mentioned it to me in a very detailed manner.

Surah Noor: There is something majestic about it. Especially this ayah

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth;
The likeness of His Light is as if there were a niche; And within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass; The glass as it were a glittering star; Lit from a Blessed Tree; An Olive, neither of the East nor of the West; Whose oil wellnigh would shine, even if no fire touched it; Light upon Light; Allah guides to His Light whom He will. And Allah strikes similitudes for men, and Allah has knowledge of everything".

My brother first drove my intention to it and he quoted in such a beautiful manner that it just struck a chord ever since.

Surah Mulk: Solely because i read it protects you from azab e kabr. It brings about a sort of comfort to me Alhumdolilah

Surah Yaseen: Said to be the heart of Quran, need i say more? Besides when i was little my mother always wanted me to memorize it, yet somehow i always slipped through her fingers and then as a gift to her i memorized it without her knowing it and i can still see her quietly crying while i recited it.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Oh and how could i forget Surah Yousaf, when i was a kid i often read the meaning and information it told as story and found it hugely touching. And i was just amazed at the ability of forgiveness Hazrat Yusuf (AS) had, to go through all that and then forgive their half brothers.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Sura-e-Furqan
As this Sura describes the Attribute of Slave of Allah in a poetic way, and give hope to sinners like myself that i still have a chance to get out of the fires of hell.
Sura-e-Waqaya=> Beautiful Sura, portraying the picture of the judgement day.

Sura-e-Rehman => i have no words to describe this sura.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

AOA WRWB
Very good topic. It draws out love for the Quran (Alhamdolillah).
Like some one said, they are all beautiful and favorites.
However, even the ahadith of Rasul Allah SAW give special status to some of them. E.g.
1) Surah al-Ikhlas: There is a sunnah to recite it in salah by Prophet SAW and he praised the sahabi who would always recite it in his salawat. It is the basis of monotheism.
2) Surah Kahf: it protects against the Dajjal and other fitn and is a light of protection and guidance for the one who recites it on friday untill the next friday.
The whole surah is *ajeeb. *It solidifies a muslims belief in the unseen and to accept the destiny (QADR) from Allah SWT.
Amazing Surah.
3) Most surah's of Juz Amma. They talk of reward and punishment repeatedly and the day of Judgement. Infitar, Inshiqaq, Fajr, Naaziat, Naba....etc.
4) al-Waqiah: Oh my God. The wealth it gives you of Allah SWT's signs and the challenges of how HE provides for all of HIS creation...
Mahsallah....the list is hard to restrict...
Quran is an ocean....
Subhallah!!
May Allah SWT increase us in love for it and bring it into our practice..! (aameen)

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Picking favourites from the words of Allah:swt:?

Impossible… The guidance from Quran can only be received if it is taken completely …

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

I believe the purpose of this thread is not to undermine the importance of quran and guidance contained in it… rather share personal heartfelt inclination toward some of its chapters.

The typical backward mindset of people of subcontinent emphesize too much on respect of holy scripture so much so that it makes people them afraid of reading with comprehesion. As a resultant they remain ignorant of this most important manual for mankind.

It is natural that a person likes a dress or food more than others … sameway answering a question about favorite fruit does not exhibit person’s dis-respect or dislike for Allah’s creation (all other fruits)

the subject matter of this thread is to share personal favorite chapter so it might ignite an interest for other to explore the commands wisdom contianed in this holy scripture. :flower1:

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Shukria codey, that is and was very much my intent and I could not have put it better myself. Many of the comments on this thread have got me to look into specific surahs and helps me learn perspectives I was not aware off…

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

surah aser--- because i work real hard and often don't see result right away so sura eser comes real handy.

And when i get scared and have un-due worries then I read surah nas/falak

==========================================================
The Sura which help me through the most difficult time of my life is sura Yaseen.

No one can discribe death In a way allah swt does him self.
The way allah swt tallah describe life in the sura ,and then whole cycle every one goes through.
And how going back to allah swt is final destination.

Re: Favourite Surahs & why?

Perfect. The Holy Quran is complete.
