wow :) Nice Thank You Again KKF !
Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
Akbar, for his tolerance towards all religions.
Honorable mention Humayun (because no one has mentioned him)

Muslims hate him because he tried to create a new religion called **'Deen-e-Ilaahi'**** ... he may have been a great king worrier but he was deffo an enemy of Islam.**
Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
Did not know this song was related to Bahadur Shah. If my brother was here, he would have said “what pathos, yaar!”
Thanks for the treat by the one and only Rafi Sahab

I was not aware of Deen-e-Ilaahi - never heard of it. Tolerance is good, in my opinion. There is place for all religions and for athiests also.

NOT at the expense of Islam...He called himself a Muslim but did everything against Islam...he is NOT even considered a Muslim by the masses.

From my perspective, it is more important to be a good human being tan a good Hindu or good Muslim. Maybe I am naive, but this competition among religions is unhealthy -
Akbar was not a riler just for muslims, he ruled Hindustan, so good foro him he was his own man.

it's NOT the view point of Islam...Islam says "for you your religion and for me my religion" but there is NO overlapping...it requires you to come into it's folds FULLY and one has to negate the idea of multi-gods AND accept ONENESS of God ... Akbar tried in vein to intentionally BLUR the line!

All religions I know have only one God. Hindus call that God Narayana. The multi-forms are just for the common person to identify with various gods - Surya, Indra, Vayu etc. To that extent, there is "oneness" of God in Hinduism also, ditto in Christianity and Judaism.
But I accept your point that "Islam says "for you your religion and for me my religion". As long as there is tolerance, it is all good.
Now you like Aurangzeb - that has me scratching my head with surprise - I hear he was a cruel and barbaric person.
But Khaan, I am out for the night :) Take it easy - will continue this discussion. I am sure I am missing something about Aurangzeb (or that you may come into this corner and remove him from your favorite list!)
And remember, Canadian dollar sucks - big time. Good night!
Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
^ Some good points there Southie. I think just for some clarifications... Akbar is not considered evil becuase he tried to strike a balance between Islam and Hinduism. Earlier Muslims and my own Ancestors had been often mixing and delving into different forms of Islam... one of the great debates raging within our faith was in fact trigerred by our migrations... anyway I digress.
What made Akbar a particularly bad Muslim was the way he eleavted his own person to almost "God like" status... according to Deen-e-Ilahi courtiers would have to do Sajdah(bowing in praise to him) Many of the hardcore Muslims found this extremely offensive. Couple this with the fact that Akbar took to Hindu customs and seemed to becoming a wayward Muslim ruler it did not really help his image. That said he was not the first to reconcile the faiths of Islam and Hinduism. Nor will he be the last... its not what he did thats the problem its the manner he did it.
More succesfull examples of integration were the Sufi Saints who adopted some of the better features of the native religions into Islam. Quwwali or Mehfil e Samma was adopted straight from the Hindu and Bhudist songs of praise or Mantras and Bhajaans.
Among my people many erstwhile Shamaminstic Pagans were slowly taught the Islamic faith but much of thier old beliefs were incorporated too.
Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
KKF, Zauq died in 1854 before exile of Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1957. I think William Dalrymple also discussed the doubts for originality of Bahadur Shah Zafar’s poetry in his famous book ‘The Last Mughal’.

I think it was during Akbar's tenure when marriages between Hindu- Muslims (without conversion of faith) started which is against the rules of Shari'a. Akbar also married Hindu girls including Rajkumari Jodha Bai... It is also said that after some years of Akbar's death Rajput / Jaat tribes raided his tomb at Fatehpur Sikri, excavated his body from grave and burnt that as per Hindu traditions.

Thanks Faris. Very informative, as always. I can now understand why Akbar's ways may have rubbed conservative mussalmans the wrong way. I did not know what Deen -e- ilahi meant. I assume it means I (Akbar) am Deen or God?

Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
Ok.... for all Aurangzeb lovers....If Darashikoh succeeded Shah Jahan in place of Aurangzeb, did it make any difference to sub-continent history?
Re: Favorite Mughal Emperor
I think Dara Shuko was heading towards a period of rapid decline. Yes he was slowly forming closer ties with native powers but it would have resulted in those native powers slowly holding the riegns over the moguls, so that the real power would have been in the hands of rajputs or a simmilar powerful native Indian nobility. By Aurangzeb taking power it meant that the Mughal empire had a chance to expand and remain the top regional power. Unfortunately Auranzeb tried to do too much and bit off more than he could chew in terms of his campaigns... many of which got bogged down in lengthy wars. One has to bear in mind the Moguls were the outsiders.
