Fault finding

Peace be upon you,

Sadly we often find individuals with such a poor understanding of Islam that they seem only to be satisfied when trying to find faults in other people’s faith. Not only is this practice prohibited by Islam, but it is a reflection of how weak such individuals personality and character may be, empty vessels which suggest a feeling of superiority, when in fact they are nothing more than hollow shells. Understanding the beauty of Islam has yet to reach such individuals and may Allah Almighty have mercy and guide us all, amen.

Allah Almighty says, “O ye who believe! do not let some men laugh at others: it may be that the latter are better than the former: Nor let some women laugh at others: it may be that the latter are better than the former: nor defame, nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by offensive nicknames: finding faults implies wickedness after he has believed: And those who do not desist are indeed doing wrong.” Surah al Hujurat (49): 11

Allah Almighty is very clear in the above statement, labeling those who go out of their way to find faults and expose perceived weakness of faith of others as doing wrong.

Elsewhere Allah Almighty says, “Allah does not love the public utterances of evil speech (al jahr bi’l-su min al-qawl)” - Al-jahr literally means broadcasting or publicizing, whereas su' denotes something evil, or hurtful, hence the publicizing of evil’ (al-jahr bi’l-su).

Speaking of this verse, the scholarly commentators indicate that the text here denounces the utterance of offensive speech absolutely, that is, regardless of the end it may serve or the context in which it may occur. This includes speaking ill of others and finding faults in their character, or of attributing misdeeds to individuals and their families.

As for those who continue to find faults in others, who persist in defaming others, who disseminate evil and expose the weakness of others, this Quranic passage warns them of the bitter consequences of their conduct:

“Those who love to circulate scandal among or about the believers will have a grievous punishment in this life and in the Hereafter; God knows and you do not know” Surah an Nur (24), verse 19

Prophet Muhammad said, “A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe”.

thanks for sharing this LUSI....
just yesterday during the Jummah khutba the Imam was saying sth along the same lines....
In our local town mosque there was some incident a while ago where some 16-17 yr old girl came to the mosque and wasn't properly dressed...and some man saw her and apparently created a scene as she was not dressed accordingly....teaching her the dress ethics for a mosque etc etc....
the Imam's point was that there was no need of creating this much hoopla....the message could have been conveyed in a proper way too....

I was also sitting in the mosque once....and after jumaah had ended a lady approached me. She said 'salaam' then proceeded to tell me that some of my hair was showing from my scarf and that I should make sure I cover up properly.
Literally, a few strands had appeared near the side of my face...it wasnt as if the scarf had slid off or anything. But I did feel that it was unnecessary for pointing out such a small 'unintentional' error amidst a gathering as I was left feeling embarassed. And I did not want to create a scene in a masjid so I just accepted what she said. But it did make me feel bad afterwards.
