Re: Fatigue after Eating

dear Niksik,

fatigue after eating comes about, when we are not satiated or have eaten too much.
summer hours are hard, that is why more lemonade and fruit is better than cooked, fried, spicy and warm taseer foods.
or eating less and fresh veges and with cold yogurt raita is better than oil laden curries and heavy stuffed paratha or heavy biryani. less is always better in food.
but of course we all like particular foods which we like to take a second or even a third serving of.

i have the same question about slumber in summer afternoons.
it must be the hot temperature that does that. unfortuantely not good for elders and new born babies at all.

weathers can teach us so much.

best,
Dushwari

Re: Fatigue after Eating

Firstly, feeling tired/lazy/sleepy after a meal is normal.

Fatigue may not be triggered every meals. If you have excessive fatigue, you can check what foods cause it. Certain foods cause excessive fatigue.

Now the reason most of us feel sleepy after a heavy meal is because most of the blood flows to the stomach to help in digesting the food, which is why you may feel a bit lazy or lack the energy to do anything. It is recommended to take a little rest after a heavy meal to let the stomach digest the food.

There have been cases of chronic fatigue. In which case you should consult your physician, and have a few tests done.

Again!! Feeling tired after a meal is normal. :)

Re: Fatigue after Eating

I just wanted to know if it is indicative of high sugar levels...I think Sara516 also is thinking along those lines.

Re: Fatigue after Eating

hm, i am not sure. the mechanism of food metabolism is that it should energize. sugar levels do go up since the body is just nourished. i will try to get some scientific research links and share.

Re: Fatigue after Eating

big dose of protein make brain work slower.
Once I heard a women who wrote a book about raising autistic kids .
She said "we shouldn't give high protein/cab diet to autistic kids. It slows down system in normal ppl too"

Re: Fatigue after Eating

Halfway through that cheeseburger yesterday :frowning: I was tired :bummer:

Re: Fatigue after Eating

I usually feel tired/sleepy after lunch. As a matter of fact it happens soon after I drink some water, which I don't during a meal.

Re: Fatigue after Eating

Not that I believe anything that I read online but this sounds pretty medical :silly:

" *If you feel sleepy after eating, particularly after sweet or bakery products, you are normal. Eating sugary foods causes your brain to make large amounts of the neurotransmitter, serotonin, that makes people fall asleep naturally at night.

Eating sugary foods or those made from flour, such as bakery products or pastas, causes blood sugar to rise higher than normal. This causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin, which drives one of the protein building blocks called tryptophan from your bloodstream into your brain, where it is converted to serotonin that makes you feel sleepy.

Many people can avoid feeling sleepy after eating by restricting foods high in sugar and flour. When it is important for you to be alert, eat foods that do not cause a high rise in blood sugar, such as vegetable salads, nuts, seeds, meat, fish and chicken. *"

i had a tikka naan yesterday at 7pm before footie, felt soo spleepy and tired for hours but i couldnt sleep needed to watch footie with m8's.
but i eat this regular but the sleepiness doesnt happen all the time weird.
:D

Looks like this question was for me, and the answer is no.

Re: Fatigue after Eating

Oh yeah this happens to me in Ramzan a lot...also I usually don't eat breakfast, so when I eat a big lunch, I get the same grogginess. It doesn't happen that often anymore because I try to eat something small early in the day.

I think the reason it happens is because a lot of food (esp. carbs) means a lot of insulin is pumped out to bring the sugar level down. but after being deprived of food, the body overdoes the insulin and brings the sugar a little too down...then u feel exhausted. and also u feel hungry again cuz you want to bring your sugar back to normal. it makes me wonder, maybe that's why dessert was introduced...a way to temporarily bring up sugar after a heavy main dish. of course, it causes the same problem again...just a thought i don't know really :P
