^ TLK I don't think it's that simple. The child is adopted & ex-husband is not child's biological father. They made decision to adopt the child as couple, now they are separated (we don't know the circumstances). The bottom line is, the ex-wife has the child's custody and we don't know how serious the foster father is about the child's well-being (or even if he is interested in staying in child's life, for that matter). IMO she is better off giving this child biological father's name (Islamic way), if THAT is not possible then giver her last name.

The question does not make sense.
When the child was adopted, the issue of name should have been resolved according to the agreement/decision at adoption.
Why making a new problem when child is going to school?
Besides, all measures should have been taken at the time of adoption to get the name of real biological father.. at least the last name. At the time of adoption, biological father's name should be given to the child.
Adoption is a big responsibility and serious issue, people should not do that if they have few brain cells not to even think about these issues from the start.
