Zaatar , is pretty easy thing to make , you may not see the zaatar fatayer or naan n the shops , but if you go to a desi/arabic food shops ... you will be able to get a ready-zaatar bottle ... its podered .. all you have to do is , put some butter or olive oil on your naan/bread and sprinkle the zaatar and warm it for a few seconds in your microwave ...
fatayer are actually little filled paties ... so you can get spinach ones , meat filled ones ... cheese ones .. herb filled ones .... etc
PS : Zaatar is called Oregano in English ... but the mix you had at the arabic shop, zaatar is mixed with sesame and few other herbs ..
You can easily get Fataayir from your local middle eastern market/grocery store. Most of them sell meat and various dishes. We get the spinach/cheese fataayir from there sometimes.
Zaatar is a type of thyme, and the herb mix referred to as just 'zaatar' also contains sumac and sesame seeds as mentioned above.
I've never heard of chicken fatair/fathayer. I'm used to fatair as a sweet! Pancake-like layers with sweet cheese or cream rolled inside. Mmmmmmm....
Basically Lebanon and a few other arab countries serve chicken / meat fatayer as well .. they are very tasty ... fatayer is really just the arabic name of paties ...
and yeah u r right…cheese-only fatayer is a time-pass i too dont like them if made with feta cheese but if its mozzarella cheese then lovelyyyyyy…when i was in saudia..i used to have those salty:-/ feta cheese and spinach fatayer at iftaars and even iftaar parties:( and its tooo :S:S:S:S:S …may be i dont like foods rich in salts…
