Something on another thread got me thinking about this. Which would you rather be?
I’ve tried Atkins in the past and can’t get past the first few days, feel miserable, tired, moody, hungry. I think most diets make you feel like this, it might be a psychological thing if nothing else
It’s not exactly as if I need to lose weight, although I could do with shedding 6-7lbs, but I think for now, I’m (slightly) fat and happy
I would pick niether.
Its a misconception that you have to be miserable to lose weight or to maintain it.
one does not have to 'diet' to lose weight, one has to make better choices in what they eat. better habits of when and how frequently they eat.
lastly, to lose weight, watching what you eat alone is not enough, workign out is, and physica activity has emotional dividends as well and increase your feelings of wellbeing and thus make you less miserable.
the issue with many people's approach is that they want a quick fix, are not mentally or logistically prepared to make a change. have minimal or no support structure in place. to people 'dieting' is a thing they do, and then it ends and they can go back to habits and choices that they had which made it necessary to lose weight to begin with.
Its a lifestyle change, some people can handle major changes like a complete change in what they eat and in some cases people like to do it gradually, make some smart choices, then some other then some other and transition that way.
SCREW atkins if it makes your CRANKY - don't do it. Put good things in your body that God created. Fruit and vegetables and things you enjoy and YOU CAN EAT ANYTHING in moderations and exercise it off.
I would pick niether.

yup that's the sensible approach, totally agree
but still, the point I was trying to make was that to become healthy and lose weight you **do **need to give up the junk which got you fat in the first place - and that would make me miserable.
for the moment, I'd rather have a cookie now and then, and eat rotis, maybe some popcorn at the cinema, and be a little on the overweight side (my BMI is about 25.5 at the moment). the alternative is to deny myself *anything *remotely unhealthy and maybe get to a BMI of about 23.5.. but then I'd be miserable!!
i agree with X2. fads dont work when ur serious about weight loss. im guilty of trying every fad out there but jst for the fun of it i dont go on fads when im serious about weight loss.
eat healthy, dont over eat, eat till ur no longer hungry not till ur full and work out regularly. thats the way and its fool proof ;)
Why can't you have both - you can. Dieting is not a ALL or NOTHING approach.
You want your BMI to be 23.5 - that's not going to happen in a day. Put a plan together where you are not deprieving yourself and at the same time eating nutrious foods.
Eat the cookie - and walk up 4 flights of strairs. Or jog or do 100 jumping jacks
Eat a whole wheat roti
Eat popcorn - get a small bag and skip the butter.
You want junk food - eat it for lunch and not dinner so you just burn it off.
You can tweak little things in your routine and get the results. It's not like if you eat a cookie you will never get to 23.5 BMI.
That depends what 's the bar... what's your objective.
I have a friend, he's turkish..and well built... he was almost 112 Kg's when he first saw that girl in the seminar... Nilufer. So what my friend did was went on a hunger strike for 3 months...and shed almost 33 Kg's. After that he got a bit careless... and started to eat like normal human beings...no after 3 more months he's 119 Kg's. So u can blame the girl for everything. Hehe...
what do you mean by hunger strike, he msutve ate something, for him to still be alive...
and its not jsut starvation, you could lose weight sensibly, but still put it all back on if you overindulge for a while...
i lost weight once sensibly, and healthily howeve ri put it back on cos once i had lost it i was pleased, that i went to mcdonalds all the time thinking it woudlnt hurt , and it did.
you need to adopt a lifestyle change really.
and skinny and fat are relative. my cusin shes a size 12 she looks massive cos shes only 5ft.im abit taller at size 12 and i look perfectly fine mashallah, as in `normal not fat not skinny.my cusin luks great at size 8, however me at size 8, would look skinny.
