I have heard of many women doing this. They say there is no excuse for not fasting. Is this right? With my first pregnancy, my in-laws were saying it’s dangerous and nobody should endanger themselves or their child. So why do women do this? Isn’t it going alittle too far? Islam to me is about moderation and reason. Anyone have insight?
That's weird, although I have heard of some women fasting while on their period. Who knows why they do it, but why even think twice about what they are doing, when you know Allah has allowed a pregnant women to skip fast. I would think it's humble to be caring of those who are fasting around you,but like with any decision you make while pregnant you have to think of not only yourself but your baby as well.
Saima :-
There is NO reason to fast while you are pregnant. Allah has made Islam easy for mankind, not difficult. My advice to you is to take care of your health and the health of your baby. Pay the poor and make up your fasts at a later time.
I agree Diva. It's not something I'm considering for myself. I was just curious why women would be so rigid in their religion.
States of Menses or Post-childbirth Bleeding
The scholars have unanimously agreed that it is not allowed for the woman who is having her menstrual period and the woman who is affected with post-childbirth bleeding to fast. They should break their fast and make up the days later. They also agree that if they fast then no rewards would accrue to them.
The pregnant and the breast-feeding women
Allaah’s (T) great mercy towards the weak is His concession for them not to fast. Included in this category are the pregnant and breast-feeding women.
Anas Ibn Maalik said: "The horses of the Messenger of Allah (S) came towards us, so I came up to the Messenger of Allah (S) and I found him eating. He (S) said: “Come closer and eat.” I said: “I am fasting.” He (S) said: "Come closer and let me tell you about fasting. Indeed Allaah has reduced the salaat (prayer) for the traveler to the half and has removed the burden of the fasting from the pregnant and the breast-feeding woman… " [At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasai].
The above hadith needs checking out, the chain of narration, wether it is weak or sahih etc all this is important.
My wife is also pregnant and will be fasting during ramadhan but if not possible she will make them up after.
Discretion is not really a factor when it comes to one of the pillars of Islam but he (swt) has also said that no man has a burden on his shoulders that he can’t handle.
Get advice and question that advice you don’t want to be hald accountable for it on yaum ul qiyamah.
The above info on state of a womens health etc I found on this site below but you can’t go on that use it as a guide and question it to a trustworthy muslim who would know.
May Allah (SWT) have mercy on this ummah.
my wife tried fasting during last ramadhan while she was pregnant, but after a couple of hard days she opted not to fast....
and that was the right thing in my opinion....
and Islam very well allows it....

Opting not to fast she was well within her rights, but if you miss a fast intentionally you either have to make up those missed fasts at a later date or you feed 60 people.
The right thing to do is to discuss with an Imam which is what I hope you did.

I tutored a Pakistani woman who did exactly this. I think they feel that they are strong enough to fast, so why not? I told her I didn't think that she should, and that she should consult both a doctor and an Imam.
I think she stopped fasting.
if allah has given some gift to a person, such as a traveler who can reduce his salah, then to not to enjoy that gift would seem rude and denying that allah knows our powers better and thus he offered us leniency only because he knew that we are weak. so we should follow the rules in islam to our best efforts but whenever sharia gives us some leniency in some matters, we should take benefit of them. wallah o alam
