I was under the impression that Eid-ul-fitr lasts for three days and one cannot fast prior to that. On the contrary, it is only for a day and it is permissible to fast on the 2nd day and onwards.
I thought I’d share this, as many would like to start making up their missed fasts as well fast for the six days of shawwal, the reward of which equals to the reward of fasting for an entire year.
Re: Fasting six days of Shawwal & the permissibility to fast on the 2nd day of Shawwal
came up in a discussion last night so i thought i'd put it here....
imam malik rejected this hadith when he heard it....
as is known of imam malik, imam of madinah, that he based his decisions on the practice of the people of madinah....
when he heard about these shawal fastings, he said that he has not heard of the people of madinah doing such a thing and hence considered it fabricated....
also he did not quite agree with the logic of the hadith that it wud mean a year of fasting....
ramdhan actions can not be equalled in reward by other actions....
and if it just means adding 6 in any time of shawwal, why not in shaaban or other months????
and if ramadhan is only 29 days, do we fast 7 to make the total tally 36 (which wud make up the year if multiplied by 10)....
Can someone please quickly tell me of their purpose and relevance, and when is Shawaal going to be over? Is it sunnat/fardh? I want to start from tomorrow. thanks.
Question to armughal: what if a person like me has not been making up the missed rozay over the last few years. What niyat should I be making - should I prioritise the shawaal rozay or my missed ones.
catty, shawal fasting is neither sunnat nor fardh....
its nafal....
and u can make up the fasts u missed in ramadhan at any time, before or after shawal fasts, u can give priority to either....
ramadhan fasts can be made up in any month, shawal fasts have to be in shawal, so i hope u get the point....
howveer, its obligatory for u to make up for the missed ramadan days....
shawal fasts r just nafal, not accounted for if u dont wish to observe these fasts....
The fasting of six day of shawwaal is proven from a hadith in Sahih Muslim (No.1164), Sahih Ibn Khuzaimah (No.2114) etc and there are many other narrations bearing out the same meaning, thus it is **sunnah. **
^ in a sahih hadith, the Prophet (saw) told a man to fast 3 days a week, because he wanted to get extra sawab, does fasting 3 days a week become a sunnah????
hadith tells us that Umrah in Ramadhan is like hajj with the Prophet (saw), does umrah in ramadhan become a sunnah????
