Fasting on 9th and 10th Muharram

Does it have any basis in Quran or Hadith?

Lots of details here:

There were a few threads posted earlier in the week about Ashura which you might also want to take a look at.

The practice of fasting on ‘Aashooraa’ was known even in the days of Jaahiliyyah, before the Prophet’s mission. It was reported that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The people of Jaahiliyyah used to fast on that day…”

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Moosa fasted on this day.’ He said, ‘We have more right to Moosa than you,’ so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1865).

PakistaniAbroad: not quite unlike other rituals borrowed from Judaeo-Christian or pagan traditions.

As per Allah, Ramadan is the month of fasting.

Dear taz, pay no need to our munkir-e-ahadeeth members. In a hasty effort to equate muslims with jews, they forgot to read:

There were a couple of good posts regarding this a couple of days ago, here they are:

Hope that helps.

ammarr bhai.. lillah yeh batayin kay were the Jews fasting on that day or celebrating?? :konfused:

why blame ‘munkir-e-ahadith’ for doubting contradictory statements which only confuse and divide than simplify and unite muslims.
