Fasting during pregnancy

Salam to all.
Hope all are fine. I am 7 months pregnant. The holy month of Ramadan is going to start tomorrow InshAllah in Pakistan. Before pregnancy I was underweight. Height is 4’11’’ and weight was 43kg. Throughout pregnancy I have tried my best to gain weight. Now its 52 kg. I asked my doc whether I can fast. She said its upto me, if I can, medically there is no reason not to fast. But I am concerned about losing my weight and as a result baby’s weight too. Moreover, nowadays I feel thirsty a lot. I have to drink water every 5 10 minutes. Now even if I bear thirst, still there is fear of wight loss. So even doc duznt stop me from fasting, will it be sin not to fast for fear of baby’s health?
Please help me soon as only today is left to decide.
Thanks

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

You have answered your own question. Thirst is a no no if left unquenched. You need your water at this time. If god allows pregnant women to not fast, why play the hero and still go ahead and fast, especially when you have worked hard to gain weight?

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

I agree with khawa. There’s also this thread: http://www.paklinks.com/gs/parenting/343175-pregnancy-fasting.html

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

We are forgiven during pregnancy. Allah does not wish for us to suffer and we are caring for 2 people. You can make it up or give money in charity. Don't worry, just keep up your namaz and pray for a healthy happy baby.

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

^ hey you, you're still around? when's the baby coming?! :p

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

Well, I had two pregnancies and fasted during both Ramazans. My baby boy was born on 17th Ramazan and I was fasting even on that day. To me it was like an opportunity to engage my kids in something I believe strongly in. If they say babies can learn ABCs/rhymes quickly if the mother reads to them regularly while being pregnant, all the more reason to fast and pray to let your child know that Allah is the most important thing to his/her mother. Allah doesn't need our hunger/thirst. We have to realize how others would feel if caught in the same condition without food.

BTW, pregnant females can adjust their diets so that their babies are not compromised.

On another note, my sister is 9 months pregnant now and is going to fast and pray for an uneventful delivery.

In the end, that is just my opinion, you must consult your doctor and decide for yourself.

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

I used to be so against fasting for preg wmen but now i think..if you feel fine and more improtantly, if ure doctor says its okay..go for it.

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

i don't think you should fast during pregnancy esp' during 3rd semester. when allah talah, who is so kind, has given the mother-to-be full permission not to fast for the betterment of baby and mother then why not avail it? there is no sin not fasting during pregnancy, as so many of my friends in pakistan think so and if you can't make up all the fasts later (as that is really hard esp' as i had to make up 72 days of fasting which i couldn't do) then you can pay money to the poor. allah talah has made islam so fair and wonderful for us.

i see so many women, including one of my friends who is in 8th month fasting in this hot weather! when she came to my home for aftari she is worn out entirely, her face looked weary and she complained her mouth was so dry she couldn't gulp. She looked dehydrated and I think she is causing harm to herself and her baby! her feet were puffed-up and i don't know why but it didn't seem look like a good sign and she seriously needed water and to eat! except she says her islam doesn't allow her to skip fasts!!!! 8 months pregnant and fasting! She is torturing herself I think. And she isn’t the only woman doing this in my area.

i gave up explaining why she shouldn't be fasting as she firmly believed she would sin by not fasting!

what is wrong with these women who do this to themselves?

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

^ THAT'S totally wrong if she feels ill...

but i guess some women think its okay to feel sick and have their baby feel it too. =S

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

@ Iyla

many women have this concept in their minds. my mil in particular also look down upon people who don't fast even a pregnant woman , she speaks of them as if the pregnant woman who is not fasting is comitting a serious sin. I didnt pay any heed to her thoughts. I am the one who is carrying the baby and I know how I am feeling , if I feel fine I'll fast , if not I won't. We fast for Allah and not to please any human being on this earth and if ALLAH ALMIGHTY understands and gives consideration to pregnant women then it's nobody's business !

My doc told me to drink double amount of water of what I used to drink when I was not pregnant . How can one fulfil this requirement when fasting ? Your body needs extra calories too when pregnant , that can be balanced by eating a good diet but dehydration can become a major issue for any pregnant woman to tackle during fast.

i know!!! i care for her so much and i just cannot believe what she is doing and why on earth she thinks the way she does?!

i felt like shaking her to knock some sence into her mad mind but she isn't the only woman who thinks like this. and she is a doctor turned housewife which makes it so much worse as you would think that she would know the bad effects of this. fasting is deleterious to her health and her babies. also she fasted during her pregnancy 2 years back and gave birth to a still born, dont know if it is connected in anyway but you would expect her be extra worried about the baby this time round!

i know how you feel! people have such backward thinking on this topic esp in pakistan. lack of awareness.

i didnt fast during my pregnancy and while i breastfed, and i remember the 3rd class comments i got from women who judged me saying it was wrong! i got lectures on it from one woman at an aftari party as she saw me sipping water before everyone else had broken their fast. i gave her a piece of my mind as it was quite a lot to hear AND i didnt even know her! everyone believes in their own kind of islam these days which is really sad.

i offered *fidyah *for the fasts i missed. there was no way i could make them up as i thought that would be damaging for my health...i had like 72 to make up!

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

AAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, I'm sorry, this is juvenile, but when I first read your title I thought it said "FaRting during pregnancy" AAAAAAHAHAHAHH!!

Re: Fasting during pregnancy

i didnt fast trhoughout my pregnancy and only kept one fast. i also had people encouraging me to fast and though i appreciated the sentiment, it made me feel i was committing a sin. another woman pregnant as the same time as me was doing it too and more power to her but i was already getting so thirsty, it was going to be hard for me to fast the whole month. Its all upto you and if it makes u feel better, ask a scholar.

ha ha ha!

well then that is natural too...farting during pregnancy! lol!
