:salam2:
In Chapter 2 Verse 183: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -”
My Question is:
1- Prescribed upon those before you. Who were they?
2- How fasting were prescribed upon them? Same like we fast in the month of Ramadhan or in different way?
Help!!!
Re: Fasting - Decreed Upon Those Before You
Fasting is also an act of worship in both Jewish and Christian traditions.
“Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights” (Matthew 4:21)
The disciples were unable to drive out a demon from a boy, but Jesus drove it out. When the disciples asked how he did it, he said that this kind can be driven out only “by prayer and fasting”. (Mark 9:29).
Musa (AS) fasted on the day of Ashura.
It is narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best fasting is the fast of Dawood: he used to fast one day and not the next.”
Many prophets were known to fast. I am not sure about the laws that they had around fasting as we do in Islam. I.e you must fast in Ramadan. But, I do know it was most definitely an act of worship.
