Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

Those of us in the west are used to chewing mints or gums to avoid onion breath during the course of the day (apologies to those in the east. Dont mean to stereotype).

So what do you use in Ramadan for this? Obviously you cant eat anything…

Any non taste spray that can be sprayed in the mouth even?

Assalamu alaikum to Sunni Muslims

Just brush your teeth and make sure you don't swallow anything.

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

but brushing your teeth...and then not eating anything for 16 hours does tend to leave a weird taste in the mouth though..no? sticky

Brush your mouth every time you feel it is getting stale. You do not have to wait for 16 hours for the next brushing. I keep a brush and mouthwash at my office too and use them frequently to keep my mouth and breath clean. A strong mouthwash can keep your mouth fresh for hours at a time.

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

but isnt brushing yur teeth (with toothpaste) not allowed whilst fasting?

Nothing wrong with it as long as you don't swallow the toothpaste.

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

are you serious? Toothbrushing is allowed while your actually fasting? without swalloing it? what about the taste? sources please?

I’m dead serious, I don’t joke in religious matters. Source!!! well there is no specific hadith or a ayat from the Quran on ‘toothpaste’. An alternative for you is miswaak, Prophet :saw2: used to use it whilst fasting.

There was no toothpaste in the Days of Holy Prophet ( SAW) so I am free to do Ijtehad and based on my ijtehad I find it is better to brush my teeth with toothpaste to make sure that other fellow humans are not tortured with my bad breath. If I fast and my smell reeks and I talk to some non Muslim and tell them that I am Muslim I am fasting that is why my breath smells it will be a deterrent for him to even think of finding out more about Islam and Muslims.

I am sure Allah is going to reward me for this intention . Allah is not a miser Allah is not going to invalidate my roza because I am not satisfy any of my nafsani kawahish by brushing my teeth with or withoug toothpaste. Rather I am trying to be a model Muslim . That is a reason enough to hope for Allah's reward rather than Allah's wrath.

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

Peace All

Even though toothpaste was not invented in the times of the prophet Muhammad (SAW) bad breath was. Hadith clearly acknowledges that fasting causes bad breath. We should not worry about it. I tend not to talk too much anyway while fasting and keep my distance from people when talking. I don't make apologies for bad breath.

The rinsing of the mouth for wudu is a good way to reduce the bad taste, but fasting is bound to cause bad breath because of the stomach juices.

Also, in my personal ijtehad (if you can call it that) mint flavoured (possibily alcohol containing) mouthwash or toothpase compared to siwak which does not taste of any food, is not a suitable alternative. Taste especially is linked with how our stomach functions.

If taste was no concern then we should be allowed to put mint leaves in our mouths and spit them out without swallowing too.

One possible discretion could be if some sort of toothpaste flavour was found without any food associated taste, then perhaps it could be possible. By the way I don't do ijtehad ... just wanted to clear that!

can u give enlighten us in the light of Quran n Hadith-e-mubarik (PBUH) say about it.

Miswak is desi version of tooth brush , or since miswak came first then tooth brush is modern version of miswak which is clearly allowed.
Now you can say tooth brush during Ramazan is a bidat , so same logic can be applied to use of speakers for the purpose of saying azan and khutba.

I frequently attend office meetings where the next person is sitting next to me in a chair , Should I go and stand in the corner to attend a 4 hour meeting ? I should be punished for being a practicing Muslim. Or I should take one month leave for Ramazan ?
My role also dictate that I sit in front of a computer and explain something to a user of software program who is sitting beside me , how can I accomplish this feat with offending this person with my bad breath ?
So is true for many Muslims who are in Public dealing and similar kind of situations. Islam did not come to enlighten and reward only those who can afford to maintain the distance from people during Ramazan , it is Universal Religion , its rules are applicable to each situation.

The Quran and hadees prohibits eating and drinking during fasting , there is no prohibition on tasting. Based on this some fuqaha/ Alims of Islam have allowed tasting of food by a wife who's husband is abusive and will punish her for serving bad food. I have read it somewhere and my mind accepts this taweel . If someone does not agree they have the right to differ. Again it all boils down to intentions.
Allah knows the best. (wallah ho alim).

you do swallow it or do you have a wall in your throat?

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

You swallow toothpaste ? Don't you have any control on your mouth and throat muscles ?

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

you don't?

i thought shia muslims are allowed to brush while fasting as well.

Using toothpaste whilst fasting
Question: Is it permissible for one who is fasting to use toothpaste during the day?
Response: It is permissible for one who is fasting to use toothpaste , being careful that nothing from the solution goes down his throat. It is preferable he clean his mouth with a miswaak and other than it from that which doesn’t reach the throat, just as one should not exaggerate whilst gargling the water in the mouth during ablution (wudoo). Shaykh Ibn Fowzaan / (Fataawa Ramadan, Volume 2/ Page 496/ Fatwa No. 445), also (al-Muntaqaa min Fatawaa ash-Shaykh Saalih ibn Fowzaan, Volume 3/ Fatwa No. 158)

Using atomiser mouth fresheners whilst fasting
Question: There exists in pharmacies freshners for the mouth in small atomisers. Is it permissible to use them during the day in Ramadan to remove the smell from the mouth?
Response: It is enough to use the miswaak which the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa-sallaam) has recommended for the mouth whilst fasting rather than the atomisers for the mouth. There is no problem in using the atomiser as long as nothing reaches the throat. However, it is befitting not to dislike the odour (of the mouth) resulting from the fast, since it is indicative of obedience to Allaah as it is beloved to Allaah. It is mentioned in a hadeeth: ((The odour emmanating from the mouth of one who is fasting is more pleasant to Allaah than the smell of musk)). *Shaykh Ibn Fowzaan / (Fataawa Ramadan, Volume 2/Page 501/Fatwa No.457), also (al-Muntaqaa min Fataawa ash-Shaykh Saalih ibn Fowzaan, Volume 3/ Page 130) *

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

Toothpaste is allowed .. I heard it from a Sunni aalim .. and I do it ..

just dont swallow it as LUC said ..

and avoid using over fragrant tooth paste .. sometimes, its not the taste but the over powering smell in your mouth that gives you the feeling that you are tasting something.

Re: Fasting-Chewing gum-breath

Tooth paste is considered extremely Makrooh in Hanafi Fiqh and even not allowed by many scholars.

I avoid doing it after the start of Saum

What I do is before Sahoor ends, I do the brush with toothpaste and drink the water finally…

Use Miswaak .. sawaab bhee milay gaa and safaai bhee :halo:
