Fast or rapid heart beats are caused due to numerous reasons. Most of them are harmless and are not a matter of concern.
Generally they might be due to:
1) Anxiety or Panic attacks -- Triggered due to anxious situation or sudden onset of panic.
2) Excitement -- Anticipation, adventures, thrills, indo-pak matches etc
Other causes can be due to some abnormalities in heart. It is more to do with electrical abnormalities or electrical conduction in the heart. They are generally known as Tachycardia. Causes of tachycardia are numerous and it depends on where the disturbance in the electrical signal originates. Many of them are not serious in nature, and the heart beat returns to normal after a while or rest or breathing control techniques or squatting on the floor. Some of them require emergency medical assistance. Please consult an cardiologist who is an expert in electrophysiology of the heart for more details.

How does a thyroid get overactive?
The thyroid glands are attacked by the body's own immune system, which can lead to either hyper or hypo thyroid activity. Hyper thyroid activity can cause palpitations of the heart, the other accompanying symptoms are loss of weight, trembling of hands, irritation etc.
There are other numerous reasons why hyper thyroid or overactive thyroid is caused. But they are very rare.
