Fast Food and Take-Out

After seeing my friend suffer from IBS (well not exactly seeing, but hearing from her), and my sister suffer from gallstones, and from my own kidney stones…I tried to look up information on how one can improve their diet to avoid these common GI (gastrointestinal) conditions. (well, kidney stones aren’t GI conditions - but they’re still related to diet)

Now, anyone can google and find out that hey…maybe I shouldn’t be eating scrambled eggs with cheese in breakfast, and instead replace with oatmeal to provide my diet with good fiber early in the morning.

Blah.

This is not why I come to you.

Many of us here are students. This thread is partially to create an awareness among the student population as to the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. The biggest factors for me, at least, which have driven me towards opting for fast-food and take-out are:

  1. Time
  2. Money

I don’t have a kitchen - I live at the college dorms. Having an apartment with a kitchen helps in this regard, but even so I lived in an apartment this summer with a kitchen and I still didn’t cook much on my own.

So, I can’t really cook my own food because of these two factors. Students are typically busy and they don’t have much money to begin with. So a fast value meal at Taco Bell or McDonald’s seems to be better. Even with more healthy options like Subway, one still thinks of money. Sometimes, I just find it more cheaper to grab a dollar burger instead of wait in line at Subway and wait as the slow worker takes their time to dress my sandwich.

Now, the other option is take-out, which can be healthier if you find the right resteraunt with the right prices.

After seeing these two dear people have their lives disrupted because of their unhealthy diets, I’ve pretty much stopped the fast-food. Now, I’m looking for quick and healthy options.

How is Chinese food for take-out - given that you can find a place that doesn’t put much msg (or maybe none) in their food?

I find Italian in general to be heavy – but if their food is taken in with garlic, it should help.

A quick thing I’ve found useful is green tea - easy and quick to make, and it helps with digestion of fats.

Increase in fruits - they’re handy and quick to eat and you can store them in your dorm fridge or have them in your fruit bowl in your apartment - and they’re great for digestion!

Replace unhealthy snacks, like chips, etc - with carrots, celery sticks - they’re easy to carry around, and you just put a few in a ziploc bag, and take them with you to work or when you’re running errands, etc.

Any other suggestions for good healthy take-out that is FAST! And filling?
And how well are YOU managing your diet?

I’ll come back with more health-related info - please keep this thread in Life1 - its about health, not cooking recipes.

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

when i lived in a dorm, i had a mini fridge. I kept milk and juice, some fruit and some veggies in there. I had a box of cereal, a bag of bagels, some ramen noodles. For breakfast I made chai and a bagel, or cereal. Then lunch was usually eaten out, a salad, sandwich and soup..still healthy. Then dinner I usually cooked some rice or noodles with vegetables. I also kept rice cakes around or crackers to snack on. It's not hard to eat healthy if you're busy, you just need to come up with a plan and have things handy.

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

PC,

I read a book called Fat Wars... I am forgetting who it is by...but what I really liked about this book was it really talked about making healtier choices that WERE PRACTICAL like at italian and chinese restuarants... I found it reallly easy to adopt alot of the logic in the book... I alwayssss replace my sides with veggies or salad when I am eating out...and I tend to always portion my food into healthier sizes.... just because AMERICAN size portions is alot of food..... and esp when you are eating at a restuarant that is a chain.... or maybe that was just in TExas I dont know..

But give the book a read if you are interested in this kinda stuff..

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

All I can add is you have to ask yourself what actually goes in a burger that only costs $1.

If you bought the raw materials yourself - ie some meat, a burger bun, mayo, cheese, salad and ketchup etc and tried to make a burger it will cost you quite a bit and these companies are making big profits on their dollar burger - it must be full of crap!

If you want a fast filling breakfast then nothing beats Weetabix - full of fibre,

A quick meal is jacket potato (if u have a mircowave) again, full of fibre and you can put loads of toppings on like cheese, tuna, beans...

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

so now one here has GI fears? I have this horrible fear that my rectum is just going to stop working one day. Soon.

:( very pareshaan

prays for pCg

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

That’s a bit too much info.

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

No its not. I have this book, and it shows a picture of a prolapsed rectum due to Trichuris trichuria. I'd post an image in the image gallery, but I don't think most guppies would be able to handle it. I haven't been able to get the image out of my mind.

I want mine to stay right where it is. And I want my GI tract to work. No stone, no abrasions, no worms, just a beautiful healthy gut. Is that too much to ask for? It certainly is a lot to work for!

I have been fighting Taco Bell temptations for the past 3 weeks. I see the place on my way home from work, and I literally have to force my eyes off of it. :( But Tacos taste so GOOD, especially with sour cream...

Ah, back to my green tea and studies on salmon.

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

I guess the best thing for the health is to eat things that encourages one to have #2 daily (and I don't mean laxatives, though that might be worth considering if one is severely constipated).

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

alrite. healthy diets are overrated. protien shrotein whatnot.

so is milk. its useless.

and one can live without water for upto three months without any serious complications.

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out

When I was in the dorms, I had a meal plan and points on my student card, so i could buy stuff. But your right, most of the food around campuses is fast food, and the dining hall is just as bad. If you wanna eat healthy you gotta make an effort, there are non fast food places, subway, blimpies, Quizno's are a good options and eating soups...buy a small fridge and keep dry foods in your room..if all else fails ramen noodles :D

Re: Fast Food and Take-Out
