Fashion Forum

I don’t understand why there is no fashion talk under fashion forum. Seems it’s all under bazaar. But anyway, wanted to ask how a girl living abroad can learn how to stitch and design shalwaar kameez apart from traveling to Pakistan and going to some bootleg designing school. Are there any websites on this or youtube videos or classes outside pakistan on desi fashion design?

Re: Fashion Forum

I had tried looking but honestly didn’t come across anything remotely helpful. The McCall I think patterns are pretty good. I think first just learn to sew and become comfortable with a machine.

Re: Fashion Forum

The few people I know who can do this all learned from someone in their family how to stitch/sew & used random information online to learn the "design" aspect of it. If no one in your family knows or can teach you how to sew, then perhaps try finding a desi lady in your area (through the masjid or word-of-mouth) who is willing to teach for extra money?

Re: Fashion Forum

Take apart an old kameez shalwar and learn from there. These days the pattern that is used for pajamas and the shirts that are in are quiet similar to western wear, so you could just use any of the patterns from Burdin or McCalls to learn.

But before you even start thinking about sewing a shalwar kameez you have to learn how to sew in the first place. How to thread a needle, a machine, how to use a sewing machine, various finishes/threads etc.

BTW the really good schools that teach how to sew shalwar kameez have been in business longer than you or I have been alive and there are hundreds if not thousands of girls that go to them every year, so I wouldn't really call those schools bootleg :)

Re: Fashion Forum

A simple search in your area can get you in touch with sewing experts and some even have classes where they teach you. I know in Toronto there are a couple of ladies who hold private lessons.
