Fashion and the failing economy - r they frenemies?

As salaamu aleykum wa rahmetuhAllaahi wa barakaatuh.

As we all know, u.s.a. and other countries that have shares in the stock markets are experiencing a recession. I noticed that alot of posts people are talking about 200, 300 dollar for one outfit (exluding wedding outfits which will always be expensive). However I found it shocking, how can we all afford such pricy clothing? Even more disturbing is buying an outfit just for the name it has on the tag when we know that there are muslims around the globe who are getting really hit by the low economy. Ofcourse not saying that we have to give in charity to everyone and we cant enjoy nice things, no, not at all. However I think that buying salwar kameez for 200-300 dollars is quite extravagent in these times. I use to always think you could go to Pakistan or India and get pretty dresses made for less then maybe 20 dollars, but the prices I see here from people who are IN pakistan makes me shiver. Especially for the fact that it just recently had thousands of children out of homes because of the earthquakes. So how can we balance our natural cravings for things that are nice, and our responsibilities to our communities ?

Jazak Allaahu khayran!

Re: Fashion and the failing economy - r they frenemies?

PS: like I said, nothing wrong with buying nice things if you can afford it. However ever since I looked at the posts I feel really sad because some people post some salwar kameez and then replies say "its old fashion" etc. And Im not pakistani or anything and I bought some salwar kameez that I just love because they are pretty to me. But when I see others saying "but this is this brand" and "that was last season" another question comes to my mind, on how we can even enjoy the simple fact of a garnment being beautiful because of itself alone, not because of the brand or that its not silk.
