A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death and killed by her family outside a high court in the Pakistani city of Lahore, for marrying the man she fell in love with, according to police and a lawyer. Police said about 20 members of the family started attacking Farzana Parveen, and her husband Mohammad Iqbal, with sticks and bricks as they waited for the high court to open on Tuesday afternoon.
The photo below, taken by Mohammad Tahir of Reuters, shows Pakistani police officers trying to gather evidence on the killing, as Parveen’s body lies on the ground, with people surrounding the scene. The Associated Press said family members attacked the couple before a crowd of onlookers in front of the court.
According to the police, everyone who was involved in the killing escaped except the girl’s father, who admitted killing his daughter and said he did it for honor. Pakistani families who have been involved in such killings say a woman marrying a man without their permission is seen as a breach of honor of the family. To many, that translates as the reason to seek revenge, by killing their own children.
Although the Pakistani government itself does not collect any data — and it is illegal to carry out such killings — several hundred women are said to be killed in honor killings every year in Pakistan. In the latest annual report released (PDF) by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 869 women were killed in the name of honor in 2013.
Earlier this year, the BBC traveled to a village in northwestern Pakistan to tell the story of a young woman who survived an honor killing and has been publicly speaking about it since. As the story notes, such killings are difficult to prove or to prosecute because of two reasons: first, the lack of witnesses to the crime, and second, lack of motivation for the police to pursue the suspects, regardless of the evidence.
But what happened in Lahore on Tuesday seems different. It wasn’t in a remote village in Pakistan, neither was it in the middle of the night. Parveen was killed in broad daylight, in the presence of several bystanders, in front of the top court in the second largest city in Pakistan.
Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
If islam allows a woman and man to get married by their own choice.. Who are they to behave like animals? I read this on a news page on fbk and most of the people were saying barbarians .. I agree... We depict a really bad society in front of people outside pakistan .. This is sad.. ! I am strongly against all this .. :(
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
Really gut wrenching, the barbarity reminds me of the Delhi gang rape incident. The only way the govt will take notice is if hordes of common people take to the streets in protest.
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
It is disgusting. These shameful people run away too. If they have so much honor why not stay and face the law too. Hypocrites and cowards are what they are.
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
What is even more shameful is that police stood by did nothing while the woman was being killed. All those policemen should be arrest and charged with deliberation of duty and put in jail.

Its interesting that just a day or two ago I saw a snapshot of Pakistani TV channel which is showing the breaking news style headline which read "Bharat Kaa Neyaa Sharmnaak Aaalmi Record" and then the news goes on to display stats about how many rape cases have been reported in Dehli on monthly/quarterly basis in last few years. They were trying to prove how much 'unethical/non livieable' society hindustan is.
My first thought on reading that news was that it is a brave act to report a case of rape, especially after considering the stigma to it and the emotional and social consequences the victim and victim's family has to go through after reporting the incident. So I thought it showed bravery of that society, whereas in Pak not many of capable of being brave enough to report such cases but pakistani media is twisting the news and wants pakistani awaam to think negatively about india.
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
..A sign of a totally confused , disoriented and rudderless , sadistic society ...
on one hand, they cry hoarse and say their religion gives complete freedom and choice to marry , and with the same breath , Council of Islamic Idealogy passes recommendation of underage marriage and free for all kinda marriage without asking from First wife .....and also the law imposes conditions that a women cannot marry without the consent of her Wali or guardian .... Period ..
... interestingly Bibi Khadeeja the first Um-ul Momeenen married the Prophet(mpuh) with her choice and initiative .. ...and I won't say at that time Prophet(mpuh) was working under her as her manager of her business Empire .... !!
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
Our police is utter shameless, there was another incident where a girl was attacked by dogs IN THE POLICE station and they only watched as if they were watching dog fight as entertainment.
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
She was not stoned to death, rather bricked to death.
To me family should get extra punishment, since all they had to do was to disown her.
She had a husband, she was going to live with.
Not families problem any more. All they had to do swallow their pride a little.
Re: Farzana Parveen 25 Year Old - Honor Killing outside a Lahore Court
News like this makes my blood boil. I wish I could drive a bulldozer over that family and anyone else who lifted a stone/stick to her.
Dunno why everyone in that land thinks they're the "Thaikaydaar of Islam". This so-called self-righteousness of the family honor has to stop.
You yourself arent much different from "thaikaydaar of islam" thugs that you speak of. Here is your quote on the murder of Ahmadi muslim from the other post:
the 'merzai's' should all move abroad. I've heard they get refuge claims and residencies in any country easily.
I also believe they're doing pretty well outside Pakistan, specially in the western countries. They got big established communities already.
