Re: Famous Book Quotes

Perhaps one of the most powerful and attention grabbing opening sentence of any book I have read:*

"When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin*."

Franz Kafka "The Metamorphosis" <333

Re: Famous Book Quotes

"The Horror. The Horror."

&

*“We live as we dream--alone....” *

Both from Joseph Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness"

Re: Famous Book Quotes

Some of the statements in Sense of an Ending as so profound.. they talk about the effect of the innacuracies of memory on history. Raises some very interesting questions on the truthfulness of what we know and accept as "History"

History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.

History isn't the lies of the victors. It's more the memories of the survivors, most of whom are neither victorious or defeated.

Re: Famous Book Quotes

From my FB page. :D

"He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself." -- The Great Gatsby

"Meet it is I set it down
That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain." -- Hamlet

"Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!—I have as much soul as you,—and full as much heart! " -- Jane Eyre

"The Great Stories are the ones you have heard and want to hear again. The ones you can enter anywhere and inhabit comfortably. They don't deceive you with the unforeseen. They are as familiar as the house you live in. Or the smell of your lover's skin. You know how they end, yet you listen as though you don't. In the way that although you know that one day you will die, you live as though you won't. In the Great Stories you know who lives, who dies, who finds love, who doesn't. And yet you want to know again." -- The God of Small Things

"They sat there in the fresh young darkness close together. Pheoby eager to feel and do through Janie, but hating to show her zest for fear it might be thought mere curiosity, Janie full of that oldest human longing--self-revelation." -- Their Eyes Were Watching God

"Be not afraid, the isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twanging instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometimes voices,
That if I then had waked after long sleep,
Would make me sleep again; and then in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and shew riches
Ready to drop upon me: when I wak'd,
I cried to dream again." --* The Tempest*

"And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." -- The Great Gatsby

"Life is too precious to be left to chance" - Walter Moers, The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear

Re: Famous Book Quotes

I just finished reading And the Mountains Echoed. I quite liked these two:

“It’s a funny thing… but people mostly have it backward. They think they live by what they want. But really, what guides them is what they’re afraid of. What they don’t want.” ― Khaled Hosseini, And the Mountains Echoes

“All good things in life are fragile and easily lost” ― Khaled Hosseini, And the Mountains Echoes

And this one, which was quite amusing :hehe::

“In my experience, men who understand women seem to rarely want to have anything to do with them.” ― Khaled Hosseini, And the Mountains Echoes

Re: Famous Book Quotes
