DES MOINES, Iowa - Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet. The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.

“They told us we are not welcome there anymore,” said Dershem, a repeat customer at the Dragon House buffet. “We waste too much food. But the buffet is all you can eat. And you know kids. They won’t always eat everything and they want something else.”

Dershem said she paid her $5.95 fee on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits.

“They just take one bite and throw it away,” said cashier Lin Huyen. “They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food.”

Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check. “It was embarrassing. … If it’s a one-stop buffet, post it,” she said.

Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant offers all you can eat buffet, not all you can waste. Dershem’s family took food, didn’t finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said.

“Shes done that too many times,” Cao said. “We would welcome her back if she has respect and knows what she wants.”

Bob Oberbillig, an adjunct professor at the Drake Legal Clinic, says the patron would have no legal case against exclusion from a business unless there are other factors such as racial discrimination or mental health issues.

“An establishment can exclude people if they smoke or waste food,” he said. “It’s still a private business.”

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

There’s this place that I live near called “Hong Kong Buffet” and there was a sign there that said something like if you waste too much food, you’ll have to pay 20% more of your total payment. :hehe:

I don’t see anything wrong in it. People need to realize that just because you’re at a restaurant doesn’t mean you can waste food. It still required time and labor to make it.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

Buffet is haram anyway..

Because most of the time we have to stand - while eating
it is forbidden in islam - and those who do it will burn in hell (probably)

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

^ lol the only ones that eat in line are the desi aunties that shove everyone out of their way to get the food in the first place. :D

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

Uncle Stalker, please tell me you are joking.

I’ve seen that at Chinese buffets - the whole pay extra if you waste food. I’ll tell you what, I finish every darn morself of food on my plate when I go to buffets.

Its a good philosophy actually. Americans are so friggin’ greedy when it comes to their eating habits.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

Compared to whom? =O

We may be obese, but we've got manners :snooty (okay not really)

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

Throwing away food is "good manners"?

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

No, but I'm sure you could find a story of a person from any country doing that.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

Gud for those fatasses :o

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

They should be sent to Durfur for a month with Oxfam.

Sadly, many people living in developed world waste food, water and resources beyond acceptable limits

yup there is no shortage of spoiled brats around the world

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

They should implement this rule in Pakistan for kicking out people for wasting food at the weddings. I'd like to see how many guests would remain behind.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

isn't it quite common in some middle eastern countries to be served a plate full of food eat only a little bit and than throw away the rest? They show their wealth by doing this.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

^ I haven't heard of that...........

Good move by the restaurant, I hope more follow suit. Just because you pay your paltry $6 doesn't give you the license to waste all the food you want.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

The family should have been given a warning first. Children can not be held responsible for mischief.

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

wasting food is pretty bad, why cant they just put as much as they wanna eat…some people are so bad like that as if the food’s gonna run out or something they pile up and then dont even finish it…Ive seen this at mehndi’s and stuff and wastin food is one of my pet hates:mad:..GRRRRRR it irritates me coz there are so many hungry and poor ppl in the world who would love that food :frowning:

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

they better shift to pakistan:)…PPL waste LOADS of food there on Buffets:disgust:

Re: Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

NO its not quite common. Actually such a thing has never been heard of.

Traditional arabs are the closest in following the sunnah of the Prophet..in the way they eat, atleast.
