Anyone ever traced back their ancestry, especially in Pakistan or India and is it even possible to go that far back in time providing these countries keep up to date historical records? Also any sites available to research asian history?
Re: Family Ancestry/History
For ancestry record, some families like Syed, etc maintain family tree (shajra e Nasab).. There are no official resources to track such records..
There are many websites providing information about History... Whats your area of interest in Asian History?

Rajput family history mainly. I know service records are much easier to obtain.
Re: Family Ancestry/History
But in Pakistan, record keeping system is quite complex.. and there have been incidents like death of political leaders, where angry mobs destroyed the buildings containing such records.. Even getting your CNIC, based on your family data, is a tough task here in Pakistan, although the system has now been computerized for a decade.

Yeah thats such a shame, asians dont hold on to their past as much as europeans and that includes historical buildings and artifacts. I guess we could all make our own history starting with us to leave for newer generations. Anyone made a time capsule and buried it with pics and stuff from the present?
Re: Family Ancestry/History
We have Shajara e nasab.
Re: Family Ancestry/History
My family also has their Sharjah e nasab, my forefathers basically came from sammarra in Iraq.
Re: Family Ancestry/History
my forefather game from gandhaar, modern day Kandhar to lyallpur/faisalabad and after partition to patiala:)
Re: Family Ancestry/History
Is there a tradition in Hindu / Sikh to maintain family tree like Syeds and some other Muslim families used to maintain.
Re: Family Ancestry/History
In hindu tradition they maintain there genealogy by some house of pandit in Haridwar, In jats, we have gotra, gotra means the name of one ancestor from whom we originated, can be termed as a sub tribe, my gotra is Gandhar, my ancestor originated in Gandhaar, and anyone who has Gandhaar gotra is my brother or sister, in jats marrying in same gotra is punished by death by Khaps:D, In brahmins they have gotra by name of some maharishis, my hubby's gotra is vishwamitra, teacher of Bhagwan Ram and writer of Gaytri mantra:) they claim to originate from him and brahmin also don't marry in same gotra:)
Re: Family Ancestry/History
Gayatri Mantra... There was a time that due to Ekta Kapoor (Tilak wali aunty), I memorised half of the gaytri mantra..
BTW, was not marrying with cousins, always part of Hindu / Sikh religion or it developed with the time, like development of Shakahari (Vegetarianism)

All people of father side will get same gotra, so one cannot marry grandfather's brother' family member, as they will have same gotra, but one can marry in father's sister's family as her children will have same gotra, but most of the time it is avoided because of same bloodline:), This system was since begining as it was system of sub-tribe and all people of sub-tribe are brothers and sisters.
Re: Family Ancestry/History
So Brahmin knew about the side effects of cousin marriages :D
Re: Family Ancestry/History
It was also strategic as matrimonial alliances bridged the gaps between different gotra, if a pandit had two children one daughter and a son, they both will be married to two different gotra:)
being nearly 7% in India’s population they have maximum noble prize, even tendulkar is one of them:confused:
Patli haddi aur bada sar, Thin bones and big head people, and in Jat folklore it is said, pandits never forget to take revenge:(
Re: Family Ancestry/History
In our folklore its snake and camel, who don’t forget to take revenge ![]()
Why confused about Tendulkar… I liked Priya Tendulkar (one who was bhootni wife in Hum Paanch) and also host a show on Zee Tv. She was a brilliant lady died at an early age.
