families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

does anyone know of such an initiative going on at a national level.
the numbers thata re given about displaced ppl are very high, 2.5 million or so.
this would mean around half a million tents for living, facilities for bathrooms, kitchens and what nots.

I dont know that with the sheer number of tents needed, if they can all be there and be set up soon enough to house individual families. that may take a few weeks to do even if supplies have been secured.

short term solution is to have larger roof tents, no walls, just a cover to protect from rain atleast

however, the infratsructure of these places is gone..the camp situation is going to be a temporary, but not a short term temporary situation.

I was thinking and the only realistic mid term solution in my mind is people being taken in as guests in other people’s homes around the region. is there such a ovement underway?

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

does pakistan not have indoor facilites which can be used as temporary shelter ?

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

kami, the closest metropolisis where the earthquake hasn't left a huge impact are probably Peshawar, Islamabad or Pindi where these people maybe sheltered on temporary or semi permanent basis. A lot of these people would end up migrating any way if the reconstruction does not take place almost on a war footing, considering the fact that there's no livelihood for people and even if there's, most of the skilled folks are badly affected.

There's just no easy way out of this situation.

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

My cousins friend has his home open in islamabad. He is hosting medical supplies in a room and few injuired till they find ways to go somewhere. He is also hosting a team of medics who will be leaving for more remote areas today (as i know of).

And i m sure there are others who have done the same.

On a similar note, various politicians & ministers have private properties in Islamabad & Pindi which r close to effected areas. have anyone heard of anyone who opened the doors of their private properties for the needy?

:bravo:

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

yaro, i just have not heard this concept being talked about at all maybe it needs to be pushed up to the national media and dialogue.

abdullah is right many of the ppl will have to move to have economic oportunities anyways, camps are not going to provide that.

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

theirs like nothing left in pakistan, there are 2 million people on the streets, and pakistan needs a billion dollars to rebuild, what most do u expect?

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

Fraudia, I was thinking of the same but then I thought that those who have "relatives" in other cities might get help, but there must be many many families whose all relatives were in same city and hence nowhere to go unless chachay ka salay ka mamoon ki beti ka susar helps them in some way. But there is definitely a need for surrounding cities to act as "ansaar" for the victims of earthquake as they can't live in "temporary" shelters for a decade otherwise they'll endup in a similar situation as "Stranded Pakistanis" in Bengladesh.

I do not wish to hurt anyone’s feelings by my reaction, since many of you might have been impacted by this earthquake personally…but…

:rotfl:

Politicians and ministers? Yeah rite.

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

its time for lal haveli to be put in good use...

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

ppl in US opened their homes to ppl affected by katrina, even if they were not related to the ppl. I do not see why people in Pakistan cant take in a family for a few months until they are back on their feet.

just a thought

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

Yeah ppl should open their homes to these victims as there are not a lot of other places for them to go…but i guess there are not many of those ppl in the world :frowning:
Hopefully, Pakistani citizens will open their homes as well as their hearts, they have done a LOT though, we must commend them on that…

LOL @ at the comment about govt officials opening their private properties!
That wud be a miracle, not just with Pakistan though…officials in any country…but hey, they have been doing a good job otherwise…

Also just wanted to say that, Helping Hands (London) was saying on the telly that they no longer have a problem of obtaining tents from somewhere…they have found some source that is willing to supply them with plenty of tents, so wot they need is CASH…so please donate as much cash as u can, as this is wot is really needed…they have enough blankets too…i think temporarily the tent idea is the best we can do, cos they will be covered and will stay a little warm at least…don’t like the idea of the larger roof tents without walls…it’s gonna be freezing cold at nite they need something that surrounds them…so i think if a small group of ppl are in a smaller tent it will retain more heat…of course, eventually all these ppl will have to leave Kashmir as there is nothing left there for now :crying: It will take yrs to rebuild structures, Inshallah oneday soon Kashmiris will be able to return there.

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

that is good to know

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

fraudia lalay, this has happened...on miserable ptv,the host told tht people in attobad and some other areas r providing shelter to homeless people on their own house...

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

The magnitude is overwhelming, people of Pakistan, govt army, and specially Media has so far shown great spirit, no doubt. They all are doing commendable job. Salam Pakistan :salute:

Providing shelter to quake victim is it self is Gaigantic task.

And all it requires is proper intelligent planing and implementation.

Franky Govt does not have a clue of setting up ‘tent cities/village’. Of course army can do it but armed forces are very very busy in relief work. Even those who are not in the field are busy in planning co-ordinating and resourcing … so Who’s gona do the job. ?

Option 1

In Pakistan Tableeghi Jamat hold Ijtama every year at Raiwind of around 1.5~1.6 million people. The make shift arrangments they make are also at a huge scale, which include electricity, water supply, toilets food and everything. It take months for setting up all this So they have the experience of doing the job, and they manage it very well :k:

But will they do it ?? Will the govt ask for their help ?

**Option 2 **

Setting up small temporary shelters for around 50 k at one place .. Again of course this will be comparitively easy task, local district govts can undertake in guidance of army

IMO temporary shelters are the only option posibile in near future. There is a shortage of huusing in big cities and frankly most of the population can not afford hosting another family, becuase most of the citi population is mediocore or poor, it is already hard to support their own families…

Anyway It is a Gaigantic task and very very difficult. May Allah help us all

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

I was thinking the same..

There's so many empty vacant houses in Attock because a lot of our people are now living abroad but we've got Kabuli's and Kohistani's taking care of them.. People can put them to good use and let some of the displaced in who'll get a house and the landlord will get somebody to look after the house, or even let them into betaks and hujras.....

It's Ramadan let's all encourage our relatives back home to open up their hearts and homes to these people..

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

Of course they will, although i regularly disagree with them some of those brothers have the nicest akhlaaq, they’d do anything for a fellow humabeing.. Maybe they just don’t know how to go about it yet, the goverment should get them involved..

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

Negative

the govt will go for option 2. Simply because option 1 is very time comsuiming and complicated process. establishing relatively small camps/shelters in different metropolis is

  1. convenient 2 eaiser to manage 3 take less time in set up 4 they could be set up in multiple cities simultaneously

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

well..even if they r doing, then u will not able to know beac they dont advertise their activities at all…i dont know wht jamaat as a whole is doing for such tragedy but i have seen tableeghi guys personally doing quite alot…like doctors and voluinteers belonging to jamaat went to the azad kashmir areas and must be plenty of others working in earthquake hit areas…

so above all,u will not able to know anything wht so eva they will do for the unfortunate people

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

I think one of the solutions that came out of the Katrina disaster could possibly be useful. They set up a database on a website where families could register an offer of shelter - ie., they can house X number of people, in Y location, at Z address. Then a family in need would look thru the database and make their selection. I dont think the technology is there in Pak to set something like this up but if newspapers and radio and TV stations got involved, maybe listing contacts/locations for those in need, the word would get thru?

Re: families taking in ppl made homeless by the earthquakes

We have strong family values in Pakistan...the quake effectees might have some relatives/friends etc in some other places...the accomodation possibilites should be there...otherwise the government should take care...

PS: The 2.5 million are huge labor to contribute to reconstruct their societies and lives with others help...
