They do respect that right, that is the root of the problem. When Irish independence was sought, Northern Ireland was the only part where the people (by a slim majority) wanted to stay part of the UK. Northern Ireland was part of Ireland for 1 month in 1922, but then voted to leave Ireland and join the UK.
The latest poll (carried out in 2009) indicates that 69% of people in Northern Ireland want to remain part of the UK.
