A valuable lesson for others. Don’t trust jihadis.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Ahmad al Shayea is the rarest of truck bombers – he survived his suicide mission in Iraq even though the blast from his bomb was strong enough to kill 12 bystanders.

He now works with the Saudi Arabian government to dissuade young Saudis from joining al Qaeda.

Al Shayea, who was disfigured during the attack, claims al Qaeda tricked him into becoming a bomber by asking him to deliver a tanker truck, which they had rigged with a bomb.

“They told me to take it to an address in Baghdad. As soon as I got there the truck exploded,” said the native of Saudi Arabia. He survived by jumping out of the truck.

Al Shayea renounced terrorism and returned to Saudi Arabia, where he works to convince would-be insurgents and terrorists to give up their deadly ways.

“I think God took me out of death to show others what can happen,” he told CNN. “If you join al Qaeda, they will use you, and maybe you will die.” Video Hear why al Shayea turned his back on al Qaeda »

Al Qaeda propaganda videos glorify so-called foreign fighters in Iraq like al Shayea. It has recruited them from countries all across the Middle East.

Some Iraqi officials say more Saudis than any other nationality have responded to al Qaeda’s call. Saudi officials and the U.S. military deny that claim. But Saudi sources do admit that more than 800 young Saudis have gone to Iraq to fight. That’s far more than the Saudi government has acknowledged until now.

Since 9/11, when 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis, the oil rich kingdom has been accused of spreading radicalism. It’s a claim that stings this longtime U.S. ally, which also finds itself in al Qaeda’s cross hairs.

So now, Saudi officials say they are escalating their fight against homegrown al Qaeda militants. Former insurgents and terrorists like al Shayea are their chief weapon in the battle for the hearts and minds of young Saudis.

“The reality behind it is the religious misunderstanding of Islam, so we have to correct the ideas,” said Dr. Mansour al Turki, a psychologist.

Al Shayea and hundreds of other Saudis who were aligned with terrorists are being re-educated in prisons and rehabilitation centers. They are taught that al Qaeda’s emphasis on a violent approach to Islam is wrong.

The program offers early release from prison. It’s available only to captured jihadis who demonstrate a willingness to change over the course of repeated interviews with specialists. Al Shayea said he was questioned by security forces, then clerics, then psychologists.

“They looked at my mood, listened to me. They were nice,” he adds.

Al Turki said the review is thorough.

“We make sure he understands dialogue. We make sure he is not just lying. So it is not an easy job I can assure you,” he said.

The Saudi government says more than 1,000 former al Qaeda recruits have been through the program. Seven hundred of them are now free. Critics, mainly from the country’s security forces, fear mistakes could allow some al Qaeda fighters back on the street.

A native of Saudi Arabia, al Shayea was just 19 when he went to Iraq to fight for al Qaeda against American forces. He was angered, he said, by scenes of U.S. troops killings his fellow Muslims.

“I went to Iraq with Saudi men because jihad is a duty for every Muslim,” he said. “I went to Iraq to fight the jihad and kill Americans.”

He was hoping to take up arms against Americans, but said he never envisioned himself as a suicide bomber. After his truck bomb exploded, al Shayea was captured and paraded on Iraqi TV. Burned and bandaged, he was blamed for the death of 12 bystanders. He confessed.

Iraqi security officials deported him to Saudi Arabia. Today, with the backing of the Saudi government, al Shayea gets his anti-al Qaeda message out on fliers that include pictures of him before and after his bombing. He has become the anti-Al Qaeda example.

“I learned my lesson, and others will learn as well,” he said. E-mail to a friend

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

Interesting read. One of the recent suicide attacks in Pakistan was by a 14 year old boy. Its hard to believe that anything other than brainwashing and deceit could have lead the kid to do the act.

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

Regardless the authenticity of this news and the person itself, CNN
has a good script written and it may affect some pre-jihadis...

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

My thoughts:
Al-Qaeeda is very efficient in picking up those failed people who have nothing to hope for in life. They are given a picture of 72 virgins and a kick in the boot to go suicide bombing. They are like expendable people who Al-Qaeeda itself doesn't believe to be true Muslims. I haven't heard that OBL is willing to send his son or daughter as suicide bomber.

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

What about some on the board that praise them?

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

There's something fishy about these veichle-bombings, something which doesn't quite add up.

If these groups are angry at America (regardless of whether it's because of its occupation of Muslim countries or as GBW claims its "freedoms") why would they attack fellow Muslims/Iraqis/Afghans/Pakis? Wouldn't you think they would attack those they are angry at instead? Most people who die in these attacks are poor starving Muslims who are struggling to make ends meet, they have no political agendas, you hardly ever hear of any occupying foreign troops getting attacked, I know it happens but nowhere near as much as the Muslims getting killed..

It makes you think, are these terrorists really who they're made out to be? Or is it somebody else playing the divide and conquer game? Killing two birds with one stone?

Planting bombs in unsuspecting ppl's cars, trucks, backpacks?

Are these groups really Muslim? Or were they set up with this messed up version of Islam so that they detroy their own soicety? I mean even 5 yr olds know that in the true Islam killing non-combatants and oneself even during war is Haram (forbidden).

I'm not saying it's this way for sure because I've not seen it with my eyes but it makes you think..

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

They are worst than the first kind. Atleast God provided them with gud life and education but they still hold the bigot mentality.

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

^
What sort of an idiot would praise the murder of innocents (Non-Muslim or Muslim)?

They should be reported. If Muslims reported and *nangafied/*exposed people with such scummy thoughts then maybe our future generations wont have such a hardtime being Muslims as we do because there would be less scum to give them a bad name.

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

Then they’ll accuse them of backbiting and betraying their Muslim brothers

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

What about them?

Re: Failed suicide bomber turns on al Qaeda

And??

We can’t just haath pe haath rakh ke chill and let them get on with it or this mess will never end, only get worse..

We’d be doing a favour to Islam and our future generations, these sort of people will make them want to turn into apostates due to the shame of being associated with them (I myself have been tempted, may Allah forgive me).

Do you not miss the days when Muslims were just normal people? Some peoples fcuked up actions have brought us into the limelight so that we’re even criticised for the beliefs that are completely harmless and fine on Jews or Christians but not on Muslims..

Sometimes I think these groups are in the interest of the government, as an excuse to eventually deport us all and annex our countries.. The British government gave refuge to all their leaders the Bakras, Bakris, Khothas, Hooks, Pirates and what have you, they’d let them openly spew their filth in the middle of London and Manchester protected by police guards, they pampered them up with benefits from our tax money..

There was a few documentaries on these people way before Sept 11. and all the Muslims wanted the government to crack down on them because they were leading young vulnerable Muslims astray from the local Mosques but nobody paid any heed… These guys are so brainless, they are nothing just pieces of sh*t yet they think they can take over the whole world with their jazbaat and crazy speeches, they make me laugh, they bite the hand which feeds them, they wouldn’t last one minute if they got deported back to Pak.. Muslim world has issues but they’re not going to be sorted by akkarr dikhaana, that’ll just get Muslims annihilated, look at the way Indians and Jews are excelling in everything, why can’t Muslims follow the same path? Not everything has to have a violent solution..
