KARACHI—The Chief of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, here on Wednesday tendered his resignation from the party office, the PPPP sources confirmed.
But the PPP Chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, rejected the resignation, the sources claimed.
The Makhdoom of Hala, it said, tendered his resignation, after failure in the formation of the governments in Centre, as well as in Sindh.
He had gone to Dubai to apprise Benazir Bhutto of the prevailing political situation in the country.
Talking to The Nation, former Senator Syed Taj Haider, said that Makhdoom Amin Fahim has tendered his resignation from the post not from the party, which the party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has rejected it. He deplored that the government functionaries are distorting the fact and spreading baseless rumours.
The situation would be cleared when he (Makhdoom Amin Fahim) would arrive in Karachi, Taj Haider said.
The Provincial President and Parliamentary Leader of the party in Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro had gone to Hyderabad. Despite hectic efforts, no other PPPP leader was available on telephone.
“In his letter of resignation, Fahim also assured Bhutto that he will continue to be available to the party for any assistance and will not hesitate from rendering any sacrifice for the cause of the party and democracy,” said party spokesman Farhatullah Babar in Islamabad.
According to Farhatullah Babar, Benazir assured Makhdoom Amin Fahim that she had full confidence in him.
She said that having secured the highest number of popular votes in the elections and the highest number of assembly seats in Sindh, the party was entitled to form governments both in the centre and Sindh.
“However, the military regime pitted the formidable state apparatus against the party and resorted to worst kind of rigging and gerrymandering to prevent it from rightfully forming the government,” the spokesman said, quoting the Party Chairperson. Non-formation of government was, therefore, not the fault of Makhdoom Amin Fahim, she said.
Lauding the conduct of Amin Fahim, the PPP Chairperson said that he had set new standards of principles and morality in politics, which will serve as beacon of light to others.
She said she was proud to have dedicated, committed and principled people like Makhdoom Amin Fahim in the party.
