FACTBOX - India, Pakistan military strength

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan on Thursday successfully tested a nuclear-capable ground-launched cruise missile, a military spokesman said.

Following are estimates of the military strength of Pakistan and its regional nuclear-armed rival India.

**PAKISTAN **

Defence budget: 224 billion rupees ($3.75 billion) for 2005/06.

Estimated nuclear warheads: 25 to 50.

Troops: active 619,000; reserves 513,000; paramilitary forces approx. 290,000.

Army: tanks approx. 2,460; artillery approx. 2,000; armoured personnel carriers approx. 1,250.

Air force: Combat aircraft approx 415.

Navy: submarines 8, surface combatants 7.

Missile types and ranges: Shaheen 1 (600 km/375 miles), Shaheen 2 (Up to 2,000 km/1,200 miles), Ghauri 1 (1,500 km/940 miles), Ghauri 2 (2,300 km/1,440 miles), Hatf 1A (100 km/63 miles), Hatf 2 (180 km/110 miles), Hatf 3 (290 km/180 miles), cruise missile Babur (500 km/310 miles).

Defence budget: 830 billion rupees ($19 billion) for 2005/06.

Estimated nuclear warheads: 100 to 150.

Troops: active 1,325,000; reserves 535,000; paramilitary forces 1,089,700.

Army: tanks approx. 3,898; artillery approx. 4,500; armoured personnel carriers approx. 300.

Air force: Combat aircraft approx. 680.

Navy: Submarines 16, surface combatants 25 including one aircraft carrier, eight destroyers and 16 frigates.

Missile types and ranges: Agni 1 (2,500 km/1,560 miles), Agni 2 (3,000 km/1,875 miles; upgraded, up to 3,500 km/2,190 miles), Prithvi SS-150 (150 km/94 miles), Prithvi SS-250 (250 km/156 miles), supersonic cruise missile Brahmos (290 km/180 miles).

Pakistan needs them to defend itself from mighty Indian air force which is 2 times stronger than Pakistan in terms of both quality and quantity. So nothing wrong with that. And like an excellent question TruckDriver has give, why is India buying huge weaponries always double from Pakistan?

Spending billions of $s every year on army, while providing nothing to civilians.

You guys seems to play lot of Indian **** and make most of the Pakistani who have no knowledge about military, blinded. Our army has supported the country whenever the country was collapsing and you SOBs say that army is bad and is hungry for power.

1948-Paki sponsored attack to capture Kashmir-result failed to capture Srinagar. Settled for ceasefire.
1965-attacked Kashmir, failed. result-settled for ceasefire.
1971-Lost war with India, Lost E.Pakistan, 90,000 POWs..
1999-Pakistan planned operation Kargil, failed. Result withdrew and settled for ceasefire.

You must be simple in your mind, if you believe 'Lossing East Pakistan, withdrawal & ceasefire every other time ' is kicking our ass.

Pakistan cant compromise on its principle stand on kashmir.Yeah India realised that they cannot confront with the big neigbour like china so they accepted that tibet is a part of china.what happens if sikkim becomes a part of china too.I think Indians will accept that too

1965-India got a drumming.....poor souls had the russians keep us off their backs, they settled for cease-fire
1971-Planted Mujib-ur-Rehman
1983-Got their ass kicked over Siachen (don't they ever tire of getting beat), in fact still getting their asses kicked
1998-India got down to its knees and grovelled to the US of A to save their asses (once again), Pakistan still controls all but one of the Kargil peaks.

For your information the F-16 planes number 25 not 75…secondly they were supposed to be the property of PAF 15 years ago, i don’t know why you still make an issue out of it. Considering the number of planes India acquired over that time, not to mention all the AMRAAMs and SCUDs and PATRIOT missiles. On top of that dont forget that India too acquires 125 F-16 planes. I dont see what India is crying over, perhaps with 25 more F-16s Pakistan will wipe out your puny a$$e$.:bash:

For the record in a general war between India and Pakistan, the Rann of Kutch has low startegic rating. Coming back to the elements that started the war: In January of 1965 the Border Security Forces (formerly the Indian Reserve Police) satrted advancing form the Chad belt (the official Indian Post) in the disputed area of Rann of Kutch. By 31st Jan, '65 they had reached forward to the Indus Ranger (Pakistan) posts at Mara, Rahim ki Bazar, Ding, Kanjarkot and Surai. This was followed by a series of Skirmishes between Indian BSF and Paksitani Indus Rangers. On 27th/28th March Indians carried out a joint exercise (Arrow Head) in the Gulf of Kutch. The exercise involved a brigade group, supported by aircraft carrier INS Vikrant an seven destroyers and frigates. In the light of existing tension the exercise was like the flickering of knives after a hot round of invective. A minor border dispute was carried forward to the point where restraint, by either side, would be contrived by the other, “chickening out”. The argument had to be carried forward.
Despite this on April 21st 1965 Pakistan proposed cease fire and withdrawal of forces. FM Ayub said "If Pakisran wanted to commit aggression it would have chosen a better area than the mud flats, and also a better time when the Indian forces were on the run after their defeat at the hands of Chinese." On 28th April Lal Bahadur Shastri rejected the proposal “If Pakistan did not listen to reason, Indian Army will decide its own strategy and employment of manpower and the equipment in the mannner which it deems best.”
