Fact file for Pakistan

Hi,
I was looking for interesting facts on Pakistan like the following one:

“Terbaila Dam is the world’s largest earth-filled dam in the world . It is 469 feet high and 2,264 feet thick at the base”

I need them for the International day that is coming up on the 21st of this month.

I tried searching google but couldn’t find what I was looking for .. maybe I wasn’t using the right keywords. Any pointers, keywords, websites are most welcome.

Karakoram Highway :Following the ancient “Silk Route”, this Highway snakes through three great mountain ranges (the Himalayas, the Karakorams and the Pamirs) and connects Pakistan to China over the border at Khunjerab Pass (4733 meters high): the highest metalled road-crossing in the world.

Markan- Balochistan: Many observers belive the regions terrain resembels the surface of the moon.

Some areas of the South, near the Makran Coast, are famous for growing 300 different varieties of dates.

Archaeological discoveries have confirmed that Baluchistan has been inhabited from the Stone Age of 50,000 years ago. The important Neolithic excavation-site at “Mehargarh” (7000-3000 B.C.) is the oldest in the Sub-Continent. Archaeologists believe that as early as 6000 B.C., farmers in the Bolan Valley were cultivating barely and wheat, thereby becoming probably the earliest humans to domesticate sheep and buffalo.

if you were to consider Hindi and Urdu as one then based on some research figures it is true. If you were to take just Urdu it will not be in any khata…

Counting how many people speak a language is not an exact science, but even if you take hindi out, urdu I believe will still remain in top five spoken languages in the world. By some estimates Urdu/Hindi combined are 2nd largest spoken langauges in the world.

And anyway, spoken urdu and hindi have drifted towards each other over the past decades, thanks to bollywood.

I seriously doubt that, a big portion of Pakistan's population doesn't speak Urdu, how can it be among the top 5 languages ?

I didn't say speak urdu as first language, but a big portion of pakistanis speak it as a second language, just like english.

hmmm … a bit of controversy here. Mahnoor bibi says that the Nange Parbat is 8th tallest in the world where as Mr. T_D_O says its the 9th :confused: … khair
