Facebook Policy Change and impact

Read this yesterday :

Terms of useOn December 17, 2012 Instagram announced a change to its terms of use. The changes, which go into effect January 16, 2013, allow for the sale of user posted photos. The new policy states that businesses or other entities may pay Instagram to display users’ photos and other details in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation or notification to the person that posted the photo on Instagram’s website. There is no option to opt out of the changed terms of use. The only way for an Instagram user to avoid the change is to delete their account. The move has garnered criticism from privacy advocates as well as consumers.

Anyone aware of this crap? does it finally mean that we should delete all personal photos off facebook?

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

As far as I understand this is only related to photos uploaded through Instagram, not the “regular” Facebook photos.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

I thought so too Umer, but what confused me after I gave it a thought was that Instagram was taken over by Facebook. So effectively Instagram is Facebook. All our personal pics are viewable in the Instagram format on Facebook.

So, when they say their can sell photos, that means all the photoes on Instagram come under this policy.

right?

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

The both belong to the same company, ie Facebook, but they are still two seperate offerings. I was not aware that Instagram is integrated with regular Facebook pics as well. If that is the case then you are right. That would be a reason to be concerned.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

I am sure its integrated with facebook. But I am hoping someone here who knows the systems more then me might be able to confirm this ..

I dont use Instagram separately as as application. But am worried hell since I read this news regards the fate of my personal pics that I uploaded on Facebook …

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Don’t know notn abt Instagram. Per CB FB took over instagram. Probably with intent to integrate.

A slippery slope has begun. They start with Inst! Photos. If it goes well they could extend too all photos. FB users should cry foul. And if no response, should stop using FB - till this is resolved fairly.

CB is becoming an activist- nice news items to bring to our attention.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Southie, yeah I have got a little activist hidden in me somewhere :cb:

FB users are crying fowl over it since two days now and FB people have even apologized that its the language used in the policy change that has created the confusion, but I dont think so, the message was loud and clear , pictures will be sold and the only way to escape that would be to deactivate the account.

But before doing so, I wanted to know, I got it right !

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Before deactivation make sure it can be deactivated. A form of protest is do nothing. Don’t use FB till resolved.no a Fiona’s is action warmth times.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Digg.com has had articles flair up on this all week. Basically the new terms of reference is in line with Facebook’s existing policies. Ever wonder why your friends like weird stuff? Because on occasion Facebook does it for you. You can Google news articles about dead people "like"ing stuff after they have passed away. Additionally just so you know Facebook sells your personal data to advertising companies and the new form of Facebook app automatically uploads all your photos on to their servers.

Here are some news paper links:

While RT may not be an honest source. Wired is and there has been a huge backlash from users of instagram. People are leaving by the droves.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

^ good point above.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Thanks Zafra, so my question , since I dont really understand the technicalities really well. Simple question is , all these pics that I have in my personal account on Facebook, are they at risk? Should I remove them and then kill my facebook account?

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

I would recommend not using the Facebook app for your phone and not using instagram at all. But I personally like my privacy. If you have an instagram account I would recommend shutting it down and deleting if you don’t want your photos used.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Nope I dont have an instagram account at all. I have a facebook account though. My concern got raised because I thought after Facebook took Instagram, all those FB pics will come under this policy too. But it seems like the FB pics are safe from this policy .. right?

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Should I need to be worried?? :konfused:

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

That’s why I deleted instragram and I am thinking of deleting all pics from fb.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

I have deleted my pics from FB already, is there still some prob?? :bummer:

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

For now from all that i have read and see Facebook photos do not fall in that category. However you never know they might. Me personally I started sanitizing my Facebook account weeks ago.

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

deleting something isn’t going to help…once you’ve posted it’s out there somewhere…

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

Buhahaha , I found out that facebook photos arent part of this policy change :e6:

Re: Facebook Policy Change and impact

^Thanks for that CB…coz I was about to delete all pics from my FB and tell them to go fly a kite!

It is so annoying that FB keeps pulling this kind of crap all the time, changing everything the way they want, and now selling ppl’s photos w/o their permission!!! There is no privacy at all!!!
