Fabric Name Help

Hi Girls,

Does anyone know where I can find (what I think is called) kaamkhwaab fabric? Please let me know if it’s called something else?

Thanks!

Re: Fabric Name Help

It's like zari, banarsi... brocade?

Re: Fabric Name Help

Thanks Gina! - I think I was getting the spelling wrong yesterday when I was googling. It's either known as kamkhwab or kinkhwab. I also managed to get in touch with one supplier in Varanasi, India - they claim they've been manufacturing the fabric within their family since 1885.

Re: Fabric Name Help

kamkhwaab or kimkhwaab is what my mom's most of the jahaiz dresses and brodal gharara was made up of and they are all fromkarachi/india

Re: Fabric Name Help

According to my father, it's pronounced 'kimkhwaab' and you get the best in Uzbekistan and Aurangabad, India

Re: Fabric Name Help

Zig, you may find it at Moon Banarsi in Lahore. They have some really incredible fabrics.

Re: Fabric Name Help

Is it brocade by any chance?

Re: Fabric Name Help

akeemkhab?

Re: Fabric Name Help

Brocade is more like banarsi fabric.

Kamkhaab is more like jamawar but more thick and expensive.

Re: Fabric Name Help

Thanks for all your help girls! I wanted to use the fabric for a gharara that I wanted to wear at a family mehndi. They sent me all these sample pics:

Re: Fabric Name Help

^werent a lot of the 1980's ghararas made of this fabric....heavier jamawaar?

Re: Fabric Name Help

^ Hey Blushy - you're back! :)

I think you're right, although I asked for kamkhwab and they said that it's similar to a heavy Brocade fabric? Not sure.

Last time I was in Faiza Samee's studio, she had sourced kamkhwab on a visit to India. OMG, she was so protective over the fabric and claimed she was extremely selective when using the fabric in her outfits.

Re: Fabric Name Help

really??? I didnt know it was so in demand nowadays. Remember this being the fabric of choice for our kiddie ghararas. Would they by any chance have it in Hilal Silk Palace?

Re: Fabric Name Help

Agreed with Gina--Uzbeki brocades are beautiful--saw them at several museums and sample photos in "The Book of Silk." Italian brocades are supposed to have intricate threadwork and brilliant colors as well:)--the Medici fabric of choice.

Re: Fabric Name Help

Ziggy some of the smaller embosses ones are gorgeous, like the light pink one. Dull 'kaam' would look so pretty on it!
