With several hits to his credit from the day he started his solo
career, including Dil Na Lage that was considered the best song of
2000, Kabhi Kabhi Pyar Mein (the title song of the play), Dil Ruba,
Deewana, Sab Tau Sohniyee and the latest one Allah Hu he has left all
records unturned. This is Faakhir Mehmood, the one time Key Board
player and supporting vocalist of Awaz. Today, after starting his
solo career, in 2000, he has no doubt made a place of his own in a
short period of time.

With his first album Aatish just released on Valentine’s Day, Faakhir
is busy these days in releasing new album. Starting his career in
early `90s from Awaz, to which he remained associated for more than
seven years, Faakhir had earned fame before he began his solo career.
Despite his not-so-obvious contribution to the band, he surprisingly
came up with captivating compositions in his first solo album.

On his transformation to a full time singer, he said, “I was always a
singer. In days of Awaz too, although, I was mainly a composer and a
arranger yet I sang a couple of songs like Jane Kon Thi Haseena,
Dhund and Ae Jewan.” He always wanted to do something different from
other singers and that is why he decided to churn out his own music.
Dil Na Lage was his first song that instantly got fame and was termed
as the best song of 2000.

Faakhir shot to fame after this song. This gave him the courage to
experiment and work on original themes. Kabhi Kabhi Pyar Mein and Dil
Ruba were some of those experiments that were instant hits, and
encouraged him to work on his new album. While talking about his
album Aatish, Faakhir was of the view, "Aatish has my best of
energies and I dedicate this album to those who love to live and live
to love.

"I started my solo career in 2000. When I sang Terre Bina Dil Na
Lage. It was not a new thing for me as I had been composing songs
earlier.

This time I tried myself and it clicked. Actually, music is an on
going process and today you need to be as much artistic and creative
as possessing good vocals." When asked about the type of market he
caters to, Faakhir tells, "My music is for all and I do not limit it
to a particular segment.

I prefer not following the market demands; it leaves no margin for
creativity. I keep on experimenting with them and that is how I come
up with some thing new.

" When asked about Dil Ruba, its composition and video, Faakhir
exclaimed, “Dil Ruba is basically a lyrical fusion of Spanish and
Urdu. There were two Spanish musicians who helped in the composition.
The results are different owing to the fact that the video was shot
and edited in Barcelona.” Talking on the importance of videos he
said, "This is a visual age and you need get the feel of the lyrics
and ambience through the video.

" Why isn’t he making any appearances in plays or commercials like
other singers? “I don’t do acting, simply because I don’t know how to
act.” Talking about experimental work, he has used Thar melodies in
Sassi Punno, besides using guitars and tabla, for lending it an
ethnic base to his song. In total there are 10 songs in which some of
the tracks are upbeat while all of them are melody oriented.

" While talking about his inspirations, Faakhir tells he is very much
inspired by the works of R.D. Barman, Beatles and Queens. Carrying
with him a rucksack of ideas, Faakhir is always looking for modern
genre of music that reflects his ideas and artistic expression.

Listening to his work, one immediately finds a connection that is
built on tradition and derived from human endeavor to discover. In
essence his work is a rendition inspired from life itself. And what
better.

PP007, here is some info which might help :

The bugle boy, you know him. He was the boy next door who did not remain one for too long, We are familiar with hit story but what we don't know is what the singer is actually feeling at this juncture in his career. Faakhir is riding the green lanes with the success of Aatish. Faakhir talks about the tenor of life these days.

Aatish is more than an album it is experience full of enchanting melodies and rhythm. I n Aatish you will find it all love, longing and hope and happiness. Life itself is essence of Aatish.

Faakhir says, he don't have any particular preferences as to the type of music he likes. "Whatever touches my heart and speaks to my soul is my kind of music". He says, He grew up listening to folk and with time developed a real liking for it. His music, as you will notice is a blend of folk and western pop elements.

He says, "I have learned to take both success and failure in my stride. I strive to learn from mistakes and work even harder. I have been offered a few films. Acting is something that I have never seriously thought about. However I do plan to do a sound track for a film. Presently local concerts and international tours are keeping me quite busy. As for the future, I will be releasing a solo number in September and a compilation of videos on VCD/DVD". --------------------

Faakhir has a unique style of music that specially caters to the younger people; upbeat, yet romantic. The music has something for everyone. He manages to come up with a spectrum of composition, which includes soft romantic songs on one hand, and foot-tapping dance numbers at the other.

During his AWAZ days he composed brilliant numbers such as “Mr. Fraudiay” and “Shawa” that become equally popular in Pakistan and abroad. His career as a solo singer took off with a bang too, when his first single “Dil Na Lagay” became a phenomenal success.

Basically explores ethnic pop that promotes and traces the traditional roots of the sub continental instruments, gelled in with the best of western music. A large part of his music’s charm and popularity lies in his ability to easily adapt to various age groups and cultures, with a variety of songs, which cater to the soft romantic, as well as the bhangra lover. With two remixes and another two songs targeting the dance clubs, we give the DJ’s world over, a fresh option to enhance the variety of their repertoire.

Faakhir wants to be a world-renowned music producer.

Fakhir is no doubt the sizzling latest pop sensation of Pakistan. With the debut solo album Aatish a massive hit, he is on a high. These days the Dilruba guy is busy working on his new album besides doing innumerable concerts and world tours.

Tell us about your career?
I started my careers in early 90’s in Awaz, where I remained for more than seven years. I used to compose and arrange the songs. Then I left Awaz and started my own work. In 2000, I came up with my first solo track, Dil Na Lage. In Awaz days too, I sang a couple of songs like Jane Kon THi Haseena, Dhund and Ae Jawan. After the success of my first song, I came with the my first album Aatish..

Why you left Awaz?
I was always a singer, the person who doesn’t sing much can’t be said that he can’t sing at all. But I was mainly a composer and arranger there. Then I decided to churn out my own music and I left Awaz.

Tell us about your first album Aatish?
The album is all pop, but it has got its ethnic roots, it is really very melodic, sweet and earthy. Though I have used western instruments but the treatment is all earthy and the end result is really very fresh music that is coming out. In total there are 10 songs in which some of the tracks are upbeat while all of them are melody oriented.

What made you go on to make Aatish?
Dil Na Lage was my first song that instantly got fame and was termed as the best song of 2000. This gave me courage to experiment and work on original themes. Kabhi Kabhi Pyar Mein and Dil Ruba and that took people by storm. Finally all these songs gave me courage to work on my original goal and I came with a completely different album.

How you feel after the success of Aatish?
With Aatish in the market, I am satisfied with my solo career. I am enjoying the same that I used to enjoy while been in Awaz. As up till and until your creativity process doesn’t stop, you keep on enjoying.

If we ask you to dedicate this album to someone, to whom you would like to dedicate?
Aatish is my first love. I have put my heart, faith and all the energies I have. It’s the cull of my life. I would like to dedicate this album to those who love to live and live to love.

How you compose your songs?
The basic direction that I follow while composing a song is that if one song can be good without instruments then it can be better when different instruments are been put into it. The basic thing is melody, if that is in a song then what ever music you use the song will attract the listeners.

What type of market you try to hit?

I am not trying to hit any market as my music is not commercial. Because if you become commercial and try following a trend then you become a slave trying to fulfill market demands.
How does u compare our pop music with Indian pop music?
Indian pop is very commercial. They don’t know what to do. Our pop singers are quite better then them as they have very much potential. In Pakistan singers compose their songs themselves but in India singers hire composers for composing music.

Which singers have inspired you?
I have a long list of inspiration as it is not restricted to one person. But works of Beatles, Queens and R.D. Barman has inspired me a lot.

What is ‘music' for you?
Music is a constant on going process. It is an evolution process and you keep on learning new things. Music is not only artistic and creative but also very much technical. You must do as much as you can to come up with perfection.

Your goal as a singer?
I have no particular goals on keeping myself to some thing limited. With the passage of time, my goals related to music will keep on changing.

Your future plans?
I am all set for a world tour and Pakistan for concerts. Besides that I am currently working on my next album that I hope will be as good as Aatish
