ARSENAL 1-0 SHEFF UTD

Arsenal and Southampton will meet in an all-Premiership FA Cup final in Cardiff on 17 May.
Arsene Wenger’s side reached their third successive Cardiff showpiece with a controversial 1-0 win against Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

And Southampton dashed the dreams of the other First Division hopefuls Watford by following Arsenal into the final with a 2-1 win at Villa Park.

The two sides have only met twice in the competition before - in 1927, and in 1979.

Arsenal stayed on course for an historic repeat league and FA Cup double courtesy of Freddie Ljungberg’s controversial first half winner.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock branded the result “a disgrace” and launched a bitter attack on referee Graham Poll.

Poll ignored Blades’ appeals for a foul on Wayne Allison, then inadvertently blocked a Sheffield United challenge in the build up to Ljungberg’s winner.

Arsenal were still grateful for a late wonder save from David Seaman - making his 1,000th senior appearance - who kept out a header from substitute Paul Peschisolido.

Arsenal boss Wenger said: “Everybody expected us to win. If we didn’t do it we would have been hammered so we were not as jubilant as Sheffield United would have been.”

And he defended referee Poll, saying: “These things happen. Do you think the referee ran into Tonge on purpose?”

Brett Ormerod set Southampton on their way with a first half header - the first goal Watford have conceded in this season’s competition.

And victory looked to be assured when Watford’s Paul Robinson put through his own goal late on.

Watford’s Marcus Gayle gave Southampton a scare in the closing minutes, but Saints held on to clinch a place in the final, and the Uefa Cup with Arsenal certain to be in the Champions League.

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan was jubilant after his side’s victory, saying: "It wasn’t a classic, but you don’t get many good FA Cup semi-finals - but the final is a good game to be involved in.

“We are not going to Cardiff just to enjoy the game. We are going there to win it - the reaction from the fans at the final whistle was as good as anything I’ve seen and I’m delighted for everybody.”

Gooonaaazzz!!!! all the way..
