So I want to use this thread for sharing some basic camera settings and what they are used for, some tips and tricks of the camera world and some examples.
I’ll start with F-stops.
The opening where the light comes through is called the aperture. The larger the opening or the wider the aperture, more light comes through with each exposure. And the smaller the opening, it’s less light per exposure. How do you decide what to do?
If there’s too much light you want to let less light come
A smaller aperture also means more of your photograph will be in focus
Let’s say you want one thing in focus and a blurred background, you’d want more light to come in, so a wider aperture will be in order.
Aperture is measured with F-stops. A low number like f/1.8 means a wider aperture. The higher the number goes, the lower the aperture.
I’ll post some pictures later to give examples. Meanwhile, please share…

I’ve had my DSLR sitting in my home for years. Got interested a few months ago. Took a class. Still learning, but seriously, it’s amazing what you can do with your camera when you learn how it works.
Here’s another picture with a blurry background, the flower in focus. Taken by my daughter who’s also learning photography.
