If you are buying it for backup then buy solid state external drives. Why because after losing my data by dropping a mechanical hard drive I lost my backup. With SDHD you do not have this issue any more and they are getting cheaper by the day. I bought one 128 G hard drive from Sams Club for 30 dollars. It is just pretty thin and small too.
I swear it the next best thing after the invention of sliced bread. If you are on windows 7 or above you can use ReadyBoost feature to enhance speed of your computer.
Solid state hard drives are very expensive. 1TB storage on SSD might be upwards of $ 500, but less than $ 100 on HDD. If going with HDD, I would recommend Western Digital over the other brands.
Solid State is a different kind of structure altogether.
A traditional hard drive would have a disc that spins. Picture a record player, as the needle goes over surface of the disc, data is read and written. Overtime due to wear and tear, the hardware can fail. If you drop or bump the hard drive, the header can get out of place, among other issues which result when dealing with anything mechanical. It’s just the nature of the hardware.
Solid State on the other hand is like your flash drive on a bigger scale more capacity. There is no mechanical hardware, everything is soldered in place, and because data is store on chip(s), it’s quicker to access and just as quick to write data thereby resulting in much better performance. And because it has little to no mechanical mechanism require to operate it, it is more durable and less likely to fail.
Yep got that, I did not want to confuse ZK with super nerdy post . I have attached it to my SSHD and the whole family can access all the media from the SD card flash drive, or the SSHD all of which can be connected to it. Wirelessly, using computer, tablets , iPhone etc. the media connected to this On-The-Go-Cloud can be accessed from anywhere in the world if you connect it to your LAN.
What else do you want for 20 dollars + 30 dollar worth of SSHD. for 50 bucks you can have your own portable or connected cloud.

You cant rely on mechanical hard drives (HDDs) or Solid State Drives (SSD's) for super important data, they can fail at any time, go with the cloud option.
I have Transcend and Toshiba HDDs. Transcend one is better built and solid.
If you want to go SSD route then buy internal SSDs (256GB one from Crucial costs under 100 euro here) and buy an external enclosure (10 to 15 euro) to make it portable. This way you can get cheap external SSD drive.
Cloud storage is better in a sense that they replicate data hence losing it is very difficult even in a catastrophe but your data remains exposed to hacking/stealing in any cloud storage.
Amazon S3 is an enterprise level cloud storage platform, for personal use the usual ones like Google Drive, DropBox, Box are cheaper and better.
But u have to pay for cloud monthly :(
And you have to pay for Hard Disks too, Google drive is 2 USD per month for 100 GB. There is a super cheap way, get a month subscription for google drive, upload everything, and cancel the subscription from the next month. No, they wont delete your files, you can access them all you want, the catch is, you cant upload new data unless you resubscribe. You already have 15GB of google drive with your gmail account, start with that and add more if you really need.

Its much easier to hack a single person than a cloud platform if am after your data. Am not advising for a all cloud storage option, but its really convenient to have access to your data wherever you want without carrying all that hard drives, better, go for both if you can afford it.

Not saying their is anything wrong with cloud storage but most people don't have the bandwidth to transfer that much data over a connection.
