Expo 2005 delegates send negative feedback
KARACHI: The overseas Pakistani investors have expressed their dismay over the arrangements of Expo Pakistan 2005 and mismanagement during event has caused heart-burn to many of the Pakistanis intending to invest in Pakistan.
A Pakistani origin Australian entrepreneur, Managing Director, Valaiti Pty Ltd, New South Wales, Kashif M Amjad in a feedback sent to the Commerce Minister, Humayun Akhtar Khan, State Minister for Commerce, Hamid Yar Hiraj, Minister for Investment and Privatisation, Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Chairman, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Tariq Ikram, said that accommodation management during the event was a disaster. Many foreigners frustrated due to the various problems expressed their concern during the event.
"If you are to do business here in this country and cannot even tackle a small administration task right such as arranging a room then what can we expect for larger business transactions", questioned Kashif who visited Pakistan on EPB’s invitation to the Expo.
He pointed that Pakistan government’s officials were staying in five-star hotels and themselves and putting overseas delegates in low-grade hotels and asking them to share rooms. This was icing on the cake for a lot of delegates from overseas. A lot of people were aware of this and being a Pakistani that was embarrassing. He said that asking delegates to share rooms even when they are not acquaintance to each other was extremely unprofessional and rude.
Kashif who sent the letter to Chairman, Hospitality Committee, Tarique Kirmani, Captain Haleem Siddiqui, Director General, EPB, Meer M Parhiar also mentioned that inauguration ceremony and gala-dinner were too, not up to the mark. He said that there were more government officials invited to the event than the genuine buyers. He said that EPB had not sent him an invitation letter even after several requests.
Kashif pointed that IT presentation at the expo was below par. "India is bustling economy due to the IT sector boom, which Pakistan missed out. There should have been a whole technology, IT and communications section", he remarked.
"Most of the foreigners did not really see any value in each of the government ministers and sponsors handing each other awards two nights in a row", Kashif said. He further mentioned that EPB and event organisers were trying to blame each other for the mismanagement in order to escape from the accountability. "The EPB was the host and it should take full responsibility. Mentioning to everyone that ‘this is our first event and forgive us for mishaps’ is also not a valid excuse", Kashif asserted.
He said that some furniture stalls were good in the event. He also lauded the speech of the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at the closing ceremony.
While pointing out all mishaps, Kashif has showed his willingness to come to Pakistan again with a hope to see better arrangements.
