It was pretty dumb, to be quite honest. It was obviously a personal decision on part of the Sharif brothers, who were likely pressed/blackmailed by Turkey into voting for Izmir.
The author is correct. Pakistanis in the UAE organized lots of gatherings to root for, and eventually celebrate UAE’s win, so the public were unaware of the way their government voted. But then again, it gives you an idea of how our handpicked rulers work. In the absence of a mind, they are always found taking orders from overseas. In this case, it was Turkey.

It was an opinion piece, not the viewpoint of Gulfnews. The same sentiment was shown in other opinion pieces as well. Yes, they got the expo, regardless, but the reason they 'complained' was because Pak govt had given them official assurances of voting in favor of Dubai. If it was a blind vote, Pak would have gotten away with it. But it wasnt.

Had someone in Islamabad done some simple calculations about the number of Pakistanis living in the UAE and the projects Abu Dhabi supports throughout the country, Pakistan might have not committed the faux pas. But in the wave of Turk-mania, even common sense seems to have taken a backseat. I thought Ishaq Dar was here recently to diffuse the situation and present some explanations, but he was actually here only for recovering payments from Etisalat.
