Explaining the Hadeeth: "Allah created Adam in His picture ...

There seems to be some confusion over the hadeeth, as i noticed in another thread.

If one was to look at the Arabic wording of the narration, one would clearly see that it is straight forward in understanding.

The hadeeth which i’ll quote below insha’Allaah, does NOT mean that Allaah moulded Adam - 'alayhi salaam - to resemble Allaah in any way or form, as He Himself states in the Qur’aan, in the chapter before the penultimate:

**Say, "He is Allaah, [who is] One,

Allaah, the Eternal Refuge.

He neither begets nor is born,

Nor is there to Him any equivalent."** [Soorah al-Ikhlaas 112:1-4]

Now I’m no Learnado, but if i were to paint a scenic picture with trees mountains and streams, and then decided to paint a house, one would say that “he paited a house in his picture/image.”

Now Allaah - subhaana wa ta’aala - is The Creator, and wheras i could only paint a house in my picture (i.e. image of scenery), Allaah created Adam - 'alayhi salaam - in his picture (i.e. as part of His Creation)

You don’t have to be a Picasso to understand the hadeeth!

Please read how brother Ibrahim explained this hadeeth in his earlier post, in one of the threads, which unfortunately some over-looked, or simply ignored!:

Ibrahim says: salaams to all

For those who may be misled by the suggestions of the shaitan, let me reveal the meanings in this hadith, which can easily be misconceived due to it is wordings …

Understanding Islam is simple , it needs the use of intellect and sound reason. In fact the root of Islam is sound logic and reason.

Any way lets look at how this hadith is worded

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Hadith 8.246 Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, ** "Allah created Adam in His picture, sixty cubits (about 30 meters) in height.** When He created him, He said (to him), ‘Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen what they will say in reply to you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.’ Adam (went and) said, ‘As-Salamu alaikum (Peace be upon you).’ They replied, 'As-Salamu-‘Alaika wa Rahmatullah (Peace and Allah’s Mercy be on you).’ So they increased ‘Wa Rahmatullah.’ " The Prophet added, “So whoever will enter Paradise, will be of the shape and picture of Adam. ** Since then the creation of Adam’s (offspring) (i.e. stature of human beings is being diminished continuously) to the present time.”**

Ibrahim says: For those who are sincerely seeking knowledge. Kindly read the above hadith again and contemplate based on the fact that from ancient times Allah (swt) had repeated over and over again that Allah (swt) does not have an image or form that man can see or imagine or construct for himself. This was a safeguard against the spread of evil or deception concerning Allah (swt) .** meaning there can be no imitation or imitating or incarnation or reincarnation of God. **

The keyword in all scriptures being:

** “And there is none like unto Him” **

Thus for Muslims who have knowledge and the intellect to reason for themselves, the above hadith is not flawed or in error. Since No hadith that contradicts the Qur’an is considered sahih.

So one may wonder why did some jokers, who think they are Muslims ended up being misguided? That too is the will of Allah (swt) for it is by their own works they have lost their senses to perceive the evident and will earn what they deserve in the hereafter .

Anyway, lets look at the above hadith. here the ** first point** being Adam (as) , and the FIRST batch of mankind were a larger form ( as compared to the size of mankind in the current time frame) as designed by Allah (swt) as He pictured him.

This is similar to our progress in designs and architecture. , we may understand this by looking at how our computers have changed in size. The first versions where so huge they occupied a large room but as time passed we can now carry one or many in our pockets

The ** second point** where the word image is revealed in scriptures will mostly mean that mankind (Adam (as) was created with goodness. The image/picture meaning the likeness in character with Allah (swt) and not likeness in form since the form does not exist as far as man should be concerned in this planet.

The ** third point** in the above hadith is that as time progressed our sizes have diminished to it current level by the design of Allah (swt)

** Fourth point** being man will remain as man in his physical form in heaven or hell or immaterial of where Allah (swt) has given him life and will not be running around as spirits after death , as the deluded have been preaching.

All the above can be confirmed and affirmed by earlier revelations in addition to the above hadith. Which means this hadith can be cross linked to revealed texts making it totally sound.

Hoe that helps

Was salaam
Ibrahim

Amended version...

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.

This is an interesting reply but, and i hope you don't mind me saying this, i think you've been overly elaborate in an attempt to avoid a problem that doesn't really exist.

Let's look at the hadith:

"Allah created Adam in His image..."

There are at least two hadith that contain these words. I'll begin by explaining one version first as it helps us to understand what tools and principles to use when considering hadith like this. The FULL wording of one of these versions as cited in Sahih Muslim is:

"If you fight your brother, avoid striking the face, for Allah created Adam in his image." (Bukhari mentions a similar report).

The important part of the hadith in Arabic reads "SuratiHi" (i.e. his image). The pronoun 'his' (shown as 'Hi' in the Arabic transliteration) doesn't necessarily mean that the image is a representation of Allah and that Adam (as) was given Allah's form. This would contradict the Qur'anic verse: "There is nothing whatsoever like Him." (42:11) and so can't be the correct understanding. If we look at the full hadith in context, bearing in mind this Qur'anic verse, we can conclude that the strongest possibility is that the hadith can have one of two meanings:

1) That the pronoun 'his' refers to the 'brother' that the person is fighting. In other words, the Prophet (s) is discouraging hitting the face because whoever's face you hit that face has the same likeness as our father Adam's (as) face since Allah created our faces and our father Adam's face alike. Consequently, the hadith would be translated as: "If you fight your brother, avoid striking the face, for Allah created Adam in his (your brother's) image." So how can you hit your brother when he looks just like Adam (as)?

2) That the pronoun 'his' refers to Adam (as) himself. This gives a similar meaning to (1) above except with the emphasis placed on Adam (as) rather than the brother. So here the Prophet (s) is saying don't hit your brother in the face because your father Adam's face is just like your brother's face (and would you hit your father Adam like that?).

So the 'image' referred to in the hadith is Adam's (as) and the brother's image, not Allah's image.

As for the other version: "Allah created Adam in his picture, sixty cubits in height..."

Here the pronoun 'his' simply refers back to Adam (as). In other words, Adam (as) was created by Allah in his own (i.e. Adam's own) image. This is like saying: "I painted this flower to look just like a flower." And so the hadith would be understood as: "Adam was created by Allah to look just like Adam."

Linguistically, the interpretation that Allah created Adam in His own (i.e. Allah's own) image is possible, but this is certainly not a theological possibility given that the Qur'an affirms in more than one place that there is nothing at all that resembles Allah. The most that can be said is that Adam's creation in Allah's image is a reference to the fact that Allah has instilled truth, justice, compassion etc. into Adam (as) all of which are Godly qualities.

I'm not sure if i've explained this very well, i hope it makes sense.

And Allah knows best.

Logical explanations both of em :k:

Please note that i've slightly edited my earlier reply, adding some additional elements.

These 2 quotes, in and of themselves, prove neither than man does or does not physically appear like God:

*“And there is none like unto Him” *

"Nor is there to Him any equivalent"

If God looked like George Burns, these statements would still be 100% true. God's physical image (if there were one) is the very least thing He would have in common with man. There would stil be none like Him nor any equivalent.

Ibrahim says: Greetings of Peace to one and all

Dear Seminole, you do amaze me, than again all Christians do , But since you have 20 years of study and even after 20 years of theological study you have not been able to understand scriptures is indeed disappointing but than again most Christian priests have spent 20 to 12 years of theological studies and still end up preaching falsehoods.

Anyway since you are a Christian let me use the Bible , which is the book that you would believe in and accept without doubt.

First let me quote from Numbers (Bible)

Numbers 23:19 ** God is not a man,** that he should lie; ** neither the son of man, ** that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Ibrahim says: when the above verse is found in the Bible any Christian who even things or imagines that God may look like a man or impersonated man by appearing as christ had erred

Why???

because it has been revealed that God is not a man , meaning the Creator will not look like or think like or have needs like a man .

In addition TO the above verse, IT ALSO says ** neither is He the “son of man” **

What does this means?

It means that God is not Christ either because the word “son of man” ( ben Adam in Hebrew or ibnu Adam in Arabic) is what Christ used to call himself. ( REPEATED SOME 81 TIMES IN THE GOSPEL)

Meaning Christianity has no room to stand upon when the bible is understood as it is found written.

So where do ChristianS get the notion that man is in the image of God ?

That comes when this verse is misconceived

Genesis 1:

26 And God said, ** Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:** and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

  1. ** So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; ** male and female he created them.

Ibrahim say: Now from the above two verses ( numbers 23: 19 and genesis 1:26) it would be obvious If one holds true the other will be false . which is not the case hence the fault lies in the interpretation of the translators when they translated the Original Hebrew into Greek and from Greek back to Hebrew.

In addition where the word image is written concerning God at ancient times it simply meant in likeness of goodness which was the trait mark of God.

For Christ said

Mark 10:18. "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. ** "No one is good--except God alone.**

Matthew 16:26. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, *yet forfeits his soul? * Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Matthew 13:23. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil ** is the man who hears the word and understands it.** He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

If you still have some doubts concerning God having an image that man can view/imagine/contemplate/fabricate/impersonate OR GOD APPEARING IN THE FORM OF MAN to educate man or God being one of three (trinity)

Kindly read

Mt 23: 9:- [Christ said] and do not call anyone on earth father ** for you have one FATHER and HE is in haven. **

1 Tim 6:15 :- Which, GOD will bring about in HIS own time, the blessed and only Ruler, the KING of kings and LORD of lords. WHO alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom NO one has seen or can see. to HIM be honor and might forever. Amen.

Hope that helps

Regards
Ibrahim

** wisdom is an essence ; it is not a thing, not an idea, not even a thought. **

For one to think God is some grandfather-type figure with white hair and beard, sitting upon a throne, with staff in hand, is extremely naive. God can appear as anything he pleases (that falls under His "all powerful" attributes). We have no way to imagine the "physical" apperance of God. Common sense alone would lead one to that conclusion, there is no need to search for scripture.

But these two statements, in and of themselves, do not prove one way or the other, that man physically resembles God:

*"And there is none like unto Him”

"Nor is there to Him any equivalent"*

Seminole, you would have a valid point here if we were limited to considering these verses in English. However, the original Arabic renderings of these verses signify a great deal more. In the first of these two verses in particular there is an added emphasis in the Arabic that is not immediately apparent in most English translations - that added emphasis completely rules out the possibility of any resemblance between Allah and everything that He created, in whatever shape or form. The verse is intended to deny that any human imagination or thought can conceive of Him.

I don't suppose there's much point in going into the Arabic here in too much detail, but briefly... Linguistically, this verse in the Arabic could have said: "Laysa mithlihi shay". Linguistically, that's perfectly acceptable Arabic and the meaning in English would be virtually identical: "And there is none like unto Him." However, the actual Arabic verse reads like this: "Laysa KAmithlihi shay". The rule is that the addition of a letter - in this case "KA" - affects the meaning of the sentence. Here the added emphasis on "non-resemblance" destroys any remote chance that Allah could be like anything from His creation and vice-versa and also that His creation could conceive of any resemblance for Him.

Also, verse 42:11 begins by first drawing attention to the creation of the heavens and the earth; then to humans and then to cattle. After this Allah negates any resemblance to Himself. In other words, nothing in the heavens and the earth, whether mankind or animals, is remotely like Him nor is He similar in any way to what He has created.

And Allah knows best.
