Expired food

Who here strictly adheres to dates? I can’t be bothered to if its chocolate or something like that but I’ve heard milk and meat should be consumed by the ‘‘best by’’ date. Thoughts?

Re: Expired food

I throw expired stuff no matter what it is.

Re: Expired food

i do...i simply discard a day or two before the expiry date. taste deffo goes down with the approaching date of expiry :)

Re: Expired food

.. i heard from some lady who used to work @doctors. she said food is okay even after 6 months of expiry date lol even though i dont trust that but still i think its okay for 1 or so.
but milk is strictly on expiry date!

Re: Expired food

I've eaten expired bread before. It tasted fine.

Re: Expired food

Only if you freeze it , it can last forever. They have unearthed millions of years old dead animals completely preserved in ice, didn't they ?
Milk and meat are most fragile food products , they will get spoiled on the date of expiry even if they are kept in fridge , if they are frozen then you can use them even after a year.

Re: Expired food

^ Yes, I agree milk and meat I would adhere to best before dates or proper storage techniques can help them last longer. Most food products will lose sensory properties as it reaches the expiry date but are not necessarily harmful. For example bread becomes stale but if you put a little water on it and heat it up its as good as new. No, I haven't tried it but its true. I wouldn't be worried if the chocolate or bag of chips (crsips as my brit friends like to call them) was a few days past expiry date.

Re: Expired food

chocolates and other stuff like maybe cocoa powder...thts like ok if its recently expired....
but liquids..i doubt it

Re: Expired food

I dont know what the translation of it is in english or urdu ..its a punjabi word.. meaning countries like pak india bangladesh the poor countries dont have expiry date wala system .. aur when all us pakis be in pak from US or UK .. jo kuch aagay aata hai even at resturants we consume ..and arnt bothered about expiry date .. but when getting back to UK its back to strict blah this and blah that ..and never even thinking about that ppl who cant even have the expired food .. you just throw it out like someone above wrote that they throw it even day or 2 before... so not appreciating wht one has ... ofcorse .. if taste coulour of gone off then yeh chuck it but not even bothering to open the tin or opening the packet of bread or a bottle of juice ..and just throwing it away its wasting food .. just so you can buy new ..

the comment above is simply MY opinions and beliefs which are not to insult or attack anyone

Re: Expired food

Adhere to strict guidelines for milk and eggs.

You need to know that there is a difference between the 'use by' date and the 'best before' date. With the use by date the product must be used by/around the date mentioned as it is probably an item that will perish quickly after the use by date. However the best before date does not have to be followed as rigidly as the product will still be perfectly fine for consumption after the best before date, but it won't be at it's optimum quality as suggested by the manufacturer.

If you think anything you have is going to go off and you don't have time to eat it then remember that most things are freezable. Freezing things that are nearing their use by date or best before date will allow you to use the product at a later date and will result in less food being wasted.

Re: Expired food

I think people have forgotten the art of smelling, looking at food and deciding. It all depends what you do with it. I could buy something from the supermarket and it has an expiry of 1 weeks time but is suitable for home freezing. So I take it home and freeze it and don’t use it until 1 month later. The expiry date was 3 weeks ago. It’s fine as long as it’s cooked and consumed when you remove it from freezing. Same with milk.

And another thing with milk, this packaged processed milk we use is generally okay for a while (past the use before date) as long as it’s not opened. I might keep some extra milk in the fridge and not open it until the day before ‘use before’ it’s still good for a few days. You can smell it when it’s off.

What about fruit and veg? I never look at expiry dates. Even if it gets a bit funky you can cut off the bad bits.
