Has anyone had an experience with a child who’s autistic? How were they diagnosed, how did you manage or cope and are you optimistic or more worried about their future?

when doctors say this word its hard to be optimistic just worried. my nephew was diagnosed but he is fine. He school teacher said he is misdiagnosed. according to school nurse and councilor he is normal. he only had social issues. now he goes to primary school and see no issue.
I pray for every child to recovery and live a normal life.
Re: Experience with Autism
I have worked with quite a few autistic children at school, they are all quite independent and high functioning children. Yes, they have specific needs, as parents and educators you have to make sure you cater those needs.

Everybody has some form of autism it just depends on how severe it is. I knew a few students who were at my school who had autism.
One of the boys said that he used to have to do a lot of stuff a number of times till he was satisfied. i.e. switching lights, closing doors and such. He has trouble understanding what is inappropriate and what is appropriate sometimes but he has a sense of humor and works really hard to achieve his goals.
Another student a girl just started high school wasn't very good at socializing and she was getting bullied in her classes. I walked by her class once and a boy kept picking on her so she blew up and threw a chair at him after telling him to stop several times then runout of the classroom and cried. Worst part is the teacher did nothing. didn't send somebody to her or anything. I went to her and calmed her down, yelled at the boy and the teacher for being stupid and not controlling his class. (mind you the classroom was total chaos). She later became friends with a girl who came and helped me and now smiles more often.
I don't see why anybody think they are NOT living a normal life. What is normal? If you lived anywhere that doesn't wear shalwar kameez they would find what you wear abnormal as well as eating salan. Everybody has a different perception of what is normal and what is not. Saying that you pray for every child to recovery and live a normal life is an insult to people who were born this way or live any way different from yours. You can't pray autism away because everybody has Autism it just depends on how SEVERE it is.

I do. She was initially diagnosed due to lack of speech but we have come a long way since then (3 yrs ago). Early intervention helped (I wished I would have recognized it earlier). ABA and Speech therapies helped even more. Biomedical therapies have helped tremendously. GFCFSF diet is also an component.
It's not easy. I feel like medical science doesn't have all the answers as well. So you have to be your child's advocate with school, with therapist, with school board, with doctors, with DAN protocol and with new upcoming research.
She's in regular kindergarden now. She still has attention span issues but most of her autistic behaviors have dimensioned with efforts.
Everyday is small battle between glass half empty and glass half full. We try to come up on top.
