Well g3nu1n3, your statement that GS is not a tech forum carries a good weightage in this discussion.
Yeah, I personally agree that there should be more sub-forums here on GS, this will basically increase # of techies on GS. People will start interacting frequently for sake of helping and helped out definitely.
Creating 10 forums would not be feasible I think. Well 2 or 3 is a good number and i would suggest it like:
1- Programming and Development Forum
2- Operating systems/general software problems support
3- Hardware and Networks (Internet/Intranet)
the tutorials and news will go in their relevant sections.
This will definitely help out people over here a lot.
Yes I know 10 new sub-forums is a bit too much to ask. Actually these are some of the areas that we can focus on. The actual list could be 3 or 4 sub-forums.
Well if ...
Image Gallery can have 4 (259,580 Posts)
Pakistan Affairs can have 3 (87,233 Posts)
Why can't Computer Talk (24,019 Posts) be diversified.
you see in computer section there are few useless posts and the image sections that you have mentioned have mostly "one liner " replies so 24K is a big number.
So, I think computer section deserves to be expanded to atleast 3 sub-forums.
We have looked at some of these suggestions recently, and changes will be made definitely at an appropriate time. I am more leaning towards the idea of having at least two sub-forums; one for general queries, and the other one for informative articles/tutorials. I am still a bit hesitant towards endorsing an idea where we apply fine grained distribution of forums based on topics such as OS, software etc. The general theme works best for us at the moment, when you take into an account issues such as forum traffic, nature of queries, and management. Although, something to be considered for future expansion.
Yeah its a good thing as well. But the general forum would be again having lots of threads of different concerns like it is now !
Categorizing forums like wise i said will simplify things. If I am a Networking related person so I will go in networking and hardware section often and will find out all about that specific topic same is the case for others (programming, OS's & General Softwares).
I do not think that there is need of a separate forum for just tutorials/articles, any article related to a specific topic should go into its relavant forum.
When I started at GS. Poetry and Tech were the only forums that I used to visit but then within few days I found out that Tech forum does not have the sort of participations that it should have. So I havent even been there from a long long time now. But I think IF and only IF, one have enough trafic over there that can keep the threads in sub forums moving, then you one should start sub forums other wise the single forum is better cuz there should be some feeling of life in any forum and if there is no trafic then the sub forums will reduce interest as there wont be much life in eigther of them.
And at one poit I agree with Amir, that maybe having sub forums will attract more techies but thats still a speculation. So no one can be sure about it.
So the basic aim is to increase traffic in Computer Talk Forum - right!!!
If left on its own right now, do you think that some day, out of the blue, more traffic will pour in automatically, or there should be some new incentives for BOTH the GENERAL-PUBLIC and the TECHIES. I don’t think that the former will hold.
Please comment on to get a healthy debate going on how to get both these groups attracted to visit Computer Talk.
Well, the results will be there when the number of forums will be increased.
Definitly when we will have categorized forums then people of specific interest will definitly be putting something in that forum. This way the number of tehies will increase and it is going to help a lot.
Before taking actions I do not think that we can get more and more techies in computer section. As g3nu1n3 said we will have to first make new forums and then we will see lot traffic there.
they are certainly a good aim for the long term. with the kind of participation we have right now if we divide the forums like u suggested it might happen that there is very little participation in certain forums. however, it might happen that some hard core pakistani System Engineers, Hardware Over Clocking Experts, Net Geeks, Developers as u said, who right now stay away from GS b/c they feel its not techie enough for them, might find something of their interest and contribute here.
so definitely this could be a starting point to attract more users, provided that these potential new users are made aware of the existence of this tech forum on GS.
